A South Korean court has imposed a fine of 6 million won (approximately US$4,500) on a man who falsely claimed to be a relative of victims in a non-existent Jeju Air plane crash, judicial sources confirmed Wednesday.

The Incheon District Court handed down the sentence to the defendant, identified only by his surname Kim, after finding him guilty of obstruction of business. The court determined that Kim had deliberately fabricated information that caused significant disruption to the airline’s operations.

According to court documents, the incident occurred in May 2022 when Kim contacted Jeju Air’s customer service center claiming to be a family member of passengers aboard a flight that had allegedly crashed. During the call, Kim falsely stated that his brother and sister-in-law were on the purported flight and demanded information about the supposed accident.

“The defendant’s actions triggered an immediate emergency response from the airline, which had to divert substantial resources to investigate the claim,” said a court spokesperson. “This caused unnecessary panic among staff and disruption to normal business operations.”

Jeju Air, South Korea’s largest low-cost carrier, was forced to verify the status of all its aircraft in operation at the time of the call and confirm that no incidents had occurred. The company also had to reassure concerned passengers who had heard about the false claim through various channels.

The incident highlights the serious consequences of making false reports about airline safety, particularly in South Korea’s highly competitive aviation market. Jeju Air has expanded significantly in recent years, serving numerous domestic and international routes throughout Asia.

Aviation industry experts note that such false claims can have far-reaching effects beyond immediate operational disruptions. “Even brief rumors about airline safety can damage public confidence and potentially impact bookings,” said Kim Min-ho, an aviation analyst at a Seoul-based research firm. “Airlines operate on thin profit margins, especially in the budget sector, making them particularly vulnerable to reputation damage.”

South Korea’s aviation industry has maintained a strong safety record in recent decades, with no major commercial airline crashes since 1993. The country’s carriers are subject to rigorous safety standards enforced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The legal system has increasingly taken a firm stance against individuals who make false emergency reports or disrupt essential services. Similar cases in recent years have resulted in criminal charges, with courts emphasizing the potential public harm caused by such actions.

“The sentence reflects the seriousness with which the court views this type of offense,” said legal analyst Park Ji-won. “While the fine might seem modest, the criminal conviction itself carries significant consequences for the individual’s future.”

The defendant’s motives remained unclear throughout the trial. Prosecutors speculated that Kim may have been seeking attention or had personal grievances against the airline, though no definitive conclusion was reached on his motivation.

Jeju Air representatives declined to comment specifically on the case but emphasized their commitment to passenger safety and accurate communication. “We have established protocols to verify emergency reports while maintaining operational readiness for genuine emergencies,” a company spokesperson stated.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by airlines in managing crisis communications in the digital age, where misinformation can spread rapidly through social media and other channels.

South Korean authorities have encouraged the public to report genuine concerns through appropriate channels while warning that false reports will be treated as serious offenses subject to criminal prosecution.

The fine imposed on Kim will be payable to the national treasury, though Jeju Air may separately pursue civil damages to recover costs incurred during their emergency response to his false claims.
