In a move highlighting concerns over religious misinformation, Maharashtra’s Director General of Police Sadanand Date has ordered an investigation into claims made by pastor Vishal Moreshwar in a widely circulated video.
Date has instructed Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe to prepare a detailed report following complaints about potentially false statements made by the pastor regarding his international religious activities and high-profile connections.
The investigation stems from a formal complaint filed on March 8 by BJP activist and advocate Sanjay Singh, who alleged that Moreshwar made several misleading claims in his video presentation. According to Singh, the pastor stated he had conducted approximately 40,000 Gospel meetings across 79 countries, assertions that have now come under scrutiny.
Among the more notable claims being investigated is Moreshwar’s assertion that he received exclusive privileges to share Gospel teachings at prominent U.S. government institutions, including the White House, Pentagon, and U.S. Senate. The pastor also allegedly claimed to have attended a meeting in New York alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23, 2024 – a future date that immediately raised red flags with authorities.
The case gained additional attention when BJP’s Minorities Morcha Vice-President from Thane City, Azim Khan, submitted a similar complaint on March 14, reinforcing concerns about the pastor’s statements.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Pankaj Dahane confirmed that authorities have initiated an inquiry following directives from the police commissioner’s office. “The inquiry report will be sent to the higher authorities once completed,” Dahane stated.
This investigation comes amid growing concerns in India about religious conversion activities and claims made by certain religious figures. In recent years, authorities have been increasingly vigilant about monitoring religious preaching that may contain exaggerated claims or potentially mislead followers.
Religious misinformation has become a sensitive issue in Maharashtra and other parts of India, where religious harmony is carefully maintained through various legal frameworks, including anti-conversion laws in several states. While Maharashtra does not have specific anti-conversion legislation, authorities maintain vigilance over activities that could potentially disturb communal harmony.
Legal experts note that making false claims about connections to high government officials or international achievements could potentially violate several provisions under Indian law, particularly if such claims are used to enhance credibility for religious conversion purposes or financial gain.
The investigation also highlights the growing role of social media in amplifying religious messaging, allowing claims to reach wider audiences without immediate verification. Digital platforms have increasingly become spaces where religious narratives are shaped and contested, creating new challenges for authorities tasked with maintaining communal harmony.
For Navi Mumbai police, this case represents part of a broader mandate to monitor potentially divisive content that circulates within their jurisdiction. The involvement of high-ranking officials, including the state’s top police officer, underscores the seriousness with which authorities are approaching the matter.
As the investigation proceeds, it may establish a precedent for how similar cases involving religious figures and potentially misleading claims are handled in the region. Authorities have not yet indicated a timeline for the completion of their inquiry or potential consequences should the allegations be substantiated.
The pastor has not publicly responded to the allegations as of this report.
