Lithuania Dismisses Russian Claims of Attack on Putin’s Residence as False Flag Operation

Lithuania has firmly rejected Moscow’s accusations regarding an alleged drone attack on President Vladimir Putin’s residence, characterizing the claims as a deliberate “false flag” operation designed to justify further aggression against Ukraine.

On December 29, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that Ukraine had launched 91 drones at Putin’s state residence in Valdai. According to Lavrov, all drones were destroyed, but the alleged attack would force Moscow to “revise its stance in negotiations” and had prompted Russian officials to identify targets for retaliatory strikes.

The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry issued a pointed response, stating that such claims serve merely as cover for Russian aggression and provide a pretext for escalating the conflict. “Nothing new. We remember the failed ‘drone attack’ on the Kremlin (May 3, 2023). Putin not only plans a massive attack on Kyiv, he intends to sabotage the achievements agreed yesterday in Mar-a-Lago,” the ministry stated.

This diplomatic exchange occurs at a particularly sensitive moment, as Ukraine and the United States are engaged in negotiations aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the war that has devastated Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Lavrov’s accusations as “yet another lie” specifically crafted to justify strikes against Ukrainian territory. The timing of Russia’s claims has raised concerns among Western observers that Moscow may be setting the stage for a significant escalation in hostilities.

The incident bears striking similarities to previous allegations made by Russia, including the May 2023 claim of a Ukrainian drone attack on the Kremlin, which was widely dismissed by Western intelligence agencies as a staged event.

Lithuania, a NATO and European Union member that shares a border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, has been among the most vocal supporters of Ukraine since the war began. The Baltic nation has consistently warned about Russian disinformation tactics and has maintained a firm stance against Moscow’s aggression.

Regional security experts note that such alleged incidents follow a pattern in Russia’s information warfare strategy. By claiming to be the victim of attacks, Russia creates narratives that can be used to justify its own military actions while attempting to undermine international support for Ukraine.

U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly told journalists he learned about the alleged attack directly from Putin and was “very angry” about the situation. This communication comes as Trump prepares to return to the White House in January, with many analysts questioning how his administration might reshape U.S. policy toward the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The Valdai residence, located approximately 400 kilometers northwest of Moscow, is one of several presidential retreats used by Putin. The property has historically been a secure location where the Russian leader has hosted high-profile diplomatic meetings away from Moscow.

For Lithuania and other Baltic states, maintaining clarity about Russia’s tactics remains crucial. The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry’s statement reflects the broader concern among Eastern European NATO allies that Russia continues to employ disinformation as a strategic tool to justify military actions and disrupt peace initiatives.

As tensions escalate, international observers remain focused on whether this alleged incident will indeed serve as justification for intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, potentially undermining the fragile progress in peace negotiations.
