Police Refute Misinformation in Teen Death Investigation

Los Angeles police officials issued a firm rebuttal Wednesday against what they described as widespread misinformation surrounding the death of 15-year-old Celeste Rivas, whose body was discovered in a Tesla at an impound yard on September 8.

The LAPD explicitly denied several claims that had gained traction in media reports and online speculation. According to their statement, Rivas’ body was neither frozen nor decapitated when found—directly contradicting narratives that had circulated widely in recent days.

Investigators also addressed reports concerning singer D4vd, confirming evidence that the artist had traveled to Santa Barbara County during spring 2025. However, police emphasized that the purpose behind this trip remains under investigation, and they cautioned against premature conclusions linking the travel to Rivas’ death.

“At this stage in our investigation, detectives have not established whether this travel has any connection to the case,” an LAPD spokesperson said. “We are examining all available evidence methodically and thoroughly.”

The department also provided context for a controversial sealed court order related to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s findings. The LAPD clarified that the order was requested specifically to allow Robbery-Homicide Division detectives first access to critical information before public disclosure, rather than to permanently restrict access to case details.

This practice of securing “security holds” on sensitive cases has drawn criticism from transparency advocates. The Medical Examiner’s office acknowledged this tension in a statement issued after the court order was implemented last Friday.

“The practice of security holds is virtually unheard of in other counties and has not been proven to improve outcomes in the legal system,” the Medical Examiner’s office stated. “We are dedicated to serving our community with full transparency; however, the law precludes us from doing so while the court order remains in this case.”

The order effectively prevents the release of critical information, including the official cause and manner of death, as well as the complete Medical Examiner report—all of which would typically be available through public records requests or posted on the Medical Examiner’s website.

The case has garnered significant public attention, particularly on social media platforms where unverified claims have proliferated. Law enforcement sources speaking on background indicated that such misinformation can complicate investigations by creating false leads and unnecessary public alarm.

Criminal justice experts note that high-profile cases often generate speculation, particularly when involving minors or public figures. The mention of D4vd, an emerging recording artist with a growing fan base, has amplified interest in the case beyond traditional news audiences.

The circumstances surrounding how Rivas’ body came to be discovered in an impounded vehicle remain unclear, as does the timeline between her death and discovery. These lingering questions have fueled much of the speculation that police are now attempting to counter.

The LAPD statement concluded with confirmation that the investigation remains active, with detectives pursuing multiple avenues of inquiry. Officials indicated they would not release additional details at this time, citing the need to preserve investigative integrity.

Family representatives for Rivas have requested privacy during this period, though community vigils have been organized in several Los Angeles neighborhoods to honor the teenager’s memory.

Law enforcement officials urge anyone with factual information related to the case to contact the LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division directly rather than sharing unverified details online.
