Pakistani journalist Naeem Hanif has publicly apologized to acclaimed actress Saba Qamar following a legal dispute over unverified claims he made about her personal life during a podcast appearance.
The 41-year-old Qamar, one of Pakistan’s most prominent film and television stars, had issued a legal notice to Hanif after he made allegations regarding her moral character dating back to the early 2000s. The controversial remarks occurred during a November 1 podcast on RNN TV, where Hanif was discussing Qamar’s preference for Lahore over Karachi.
In his formal apology, delivered via a separate podcast hosted by Bushran Khan on RNN Network’s YouTube channel, Hanif admitted that his claims were baseless. “I verified that news later, and it wasn’t correct, and neither was there any truth in it,” he stated. “It was contrary to the truth, which hurt her sentiments and tarnished her character. We are sorry for this and the hurt it caused.”
Qamar acknowledged the apology by sharing the clip on her Instagram story with a single word: “Speechless.”
The legal notice Qamar had sent to Hanif accused him of making “defamatory, sexist and derogatory statements” about her. She demanded a public apology, removal of the offending content, and Rs100 million (approximately US$360,000) in damages. Following the legal action, the November podcast video containing the controversial statements was removed from circulation.
When initially sharing screenshots of the legal notice on social media, Qamar had written firmly that she had “taken legal action against a journalist who spread false and baseless claims about me,” adding that “no one has the right to make false accusations just for attention.”
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between celebrities and media figures in Pakistan’s entertainment landscape. Public figures like Qamar often struggle with unverified reporting and gossip that can damage their professional reputations and personal lives. The legal action taken by Qamar demonstrates a growing trend of celebrities pushing back against what they perceive as irresponsible journalism.
Saba Qamar has built an impressive career spanning both Pakistani and Indian entertainment industries. Her notable work includes the Pakistani drama “Maat” and the Bollywood film “Hindi Medium,” where she starred opposite the late Irrfan Khan. Her recent projects include “Pamaal” and “Case No. 9,” further cementing her status as one of South Asia’s most versatile performers.
The incident also raises questions about journalistic ethics and accountability in Pakistan’s rapidly evolving digital media landscape. With the proliferation of podcasts and YouTube channels, traditional journalistic standards regarding fact-checking and source verification are sometimes overlooked in favor of sensationalism and increased viewership.
During the same podcast appearance, Hanif had also made remarks about actresses Natasha Ali and Mishi Khan, though the details and any subsequent action regarding these comments remain unclear.
This public apology marks a significant moment in Pakistan’s entertainment industry, potentially setting a precedent for how defamation cases involving public figures and media personalities might be resolved in the future. It also serves as a reminder of the real consequences that can follow when unverified claims are broadcast to large audiences.
