Social Media Misinformation Crisis Deepens as Celebrities Fall Victim to False Claims

A troubling trend of misinformation is sweeping across social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where misleading clips paired with fabricated narratives about celebrities have become increasingly prevalent. This digital phenomenon is having real-world consequences for public figures who find themselves battling false narratives they never created.

Among those caught in this web of misinformation are music artists Cardi B and Offset, who have become frequent targets of falsified claims. One particularly egregious example circulated by an account called @obsrvate claimed that “Cardi B went live on Instagram and revealed that Offset tried to reach out to her after he got shot and asked her to borrow $400k.” The accompanying video clip, however, contained no such statement and appears to be repurposed content from January of this year, deliberately presented out of context.

This account, which ironically describes itself as the “most credible news source” while having accumulated approximately 15,000 followers, routinely posts similarly misleading content about various celebrities including musicians D4vd and Playboi Carti. Despite X’s policies prohibiting “inauthentic media” that could “result in widespread confusion,” these posts have yet to receive Community Notes corrections – a feature supposedly designed to add context to misleading information.

The issue extends beyond music celebrities. Prominent streamer JasonTheWeen recently highlighted this growing problem in an interview with Complex, pointing specifically to clip pages across social platforms that use “false captions” to create inflammatory narratives.

“Clip pages nowadays, especially on Twitter and TikTok, they’re paid by Stake or Dollar Tree,” JasonTheWeen explained. “They put false captions and stir this narrative, whether it be me or a different streamer. It just creates such a big impression somehow because, I guess, it’s just out of the ordinary.”

The streamer noted this phenomenon has worsened significantly in recent years, saying, “Like a year or two ago, there was none of that, right? There were clips, but there was barely any false caption clips that created narratives.” The situation became personal for JasonTheWeen when he threatened legal action this month over an X post falsely claiming he and fellow streamer Pokimane were “directly involved” in D4vd’s ongoing murder case.

Media analysts suggest this trend represents a concerning development in what some call the “enshittification” of social media – a deterioration of quality and reliability in favor of engagement-driven content regardless of accuracy. The tactic appears to exploit users who read only headlines or captions without watching the accompanying video content, allowing false narratives to spread rapidly.

The phenomenon also reveals weaknesses in X’s content moderation approach under Elon Musk’s ownership. While the platform states users are prohibited from sharing manipulated or out-of-context media that could cause “widespread confusion on public issues,” enforcement of these policies appears inconsistent at best.

For public figures, the consequences can be significant. False narratives can damage reputations, strain relationships, and potentially impact business opportunities. Some, like JasonTheWeen, are beginning to consider legal remedies including defamation lawsuits to combat the most egregious examples.

Media literacy experts recommend users approach viral claims with heightened skepticism, particularly when inflammatory statements about celebrities appear without clear sourcing. Verifying information through multiple reliable sources and watching complete video content rather than accepting captions at face value has become increasingly essential in navigating today’s social media landscape.

As platforms continue prioritizing engagement metrics over accuracy, the responsibility increasingly falls to users to distinguish fact from fiction in what has become an increasingly challenging “post-truth” social media environment.
