Iranian Officials Deny US Claims of Military Confrontation in Strait of Hormuz

A senior Iranian military official strongly rejected US allegations on Monday that American forces had sunk several Iranian military vessels in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, calling the claims “false.” The denial was reported by state broadcaster IRIB, though no further details were provided about the official’s identity.

The dispute centers on contradictory accounts of naval encounters in one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which approximately 20% of global oil shipments pass daily. Any military confrontation in this narrow waterway could have significant implications for global energy markets and regional stability.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Admiral Brad Cooper had earlier stated that American forces “eliminated” six Iranian “small boats” that allegedly attempted to interfere with commercial shipping in the strait. Cooper further claimed that Iranian forces had opened fire on US warships and commercial vessels, and issued a warning to Tehran to maintain distance from American military assets.

The Iranian narrative presents a starkly different account of events. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran’s elite military force, denied any commercial or oil tanker vessels had transited through the Strait of Hormuz during the timeframe in question, characterizing the US statements on maritime activity as “baseless and false.”

Iran’s navy provided additional details, claiming it had issued warnings to US destroyers operating near the strait and fired warning shots after the vessels allegedly ignored alerts. According to IRIB, Iranian officials stated the American ships had approached with radar systems deactivated – a potential violation of maritime protocols that typically require vessels to maintain active tracking systems in congested waters.

Army Chief Major General Amir Hatami escalated the rhetoric, posting on social media platform X that US destroyers were met with a “forceful response” from Iranian forces, including the deployment of cruise missiles and combat drones. This claim suggests a more significant military engagement than initially reported by either side.

CENTCOM has maintained that US naval forces are operating in the Gulf as part of what it calls “Project Freedom,” an initiative purportedly aimed at restoring commercial shipping in the region. The command also stated that two US-flagged vessels had successfully navigated the strait despite the tensions.

This maritime confrontation occurs against a backdrop of intensifying hostilities between Iran and Western powers. Relations deteriorated sharply following US and Israeli strikes on Iranian territory on February 28, which prompted retaliatory actions from Tehran. The region briefly saw a reduction in tensions when a ceasefire took effect on April 8, brokered through Pakistani mediation efforts.

However, subsequent diplomatic talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. While US President Donald Trump extended the truce without specifying an end date, the United States has simultaneously enforced a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz since April 13.

Maritime security experts note that the Strait of Hormuz has long been a flashpoint for tensions between Iran and Western powers. With a width of just 21 nautical miles at its narrowest point and shipping lanes only two miles wide in each direction, the geography of the strait creates a natural bottleneck where naval forces operate in close proximity.

The contradictory claims from both sides highlight the challenges of verifying military incidents in contested waters, as well as the potential for miscalculation in a region already fraught with geopolitical tensions. Energy analysts warn that any sustained conflict in the strait could cause significant disruptions to global oil supplies and trigger price volatility in international markets.
