Iranian Parliament Speaker Accuses Trump of False Claims on Strait of Hormuz, Uranium

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf has publicly rebuked former U.S. President Donald Trump for allegedly making multiple false statements regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s enriched uranium. The accusations came in a post on X (formerly Twitter) early Saturday, marking a significant escalation in rhetoric between Tehran and the former American leader.

“The President of the United States made seven claims in one hour, all seven of which were false,” Ghalibaf wrote. “They did not win the war with these lies, and they will certainly not get anywhere in negotiations either.”

Ghalibaf’s comments represent the latest development in a complex diplomatic standoff involving one of the world’s most strategic waterways and Iran’s controversial nuclear program. The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, serves as a critical maritime passage for roughly 20% of global oil supplies, making stability in the region vital to international energy markets.

The Iranian official encouraged people to seek “the real and accurate news of the negotiations” from the Iranian Foreign Ministry. He specifically referenced a recent interview in which Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei categorically denied Trump’s assertion that Iran had agreed to transfer its enriched uranium.

“Iran’s enriched uranium is not going to be transferred anywhere; transferring uranium to the United States has not been an option for us,” Baghaei told Iranian state media, directly contradicting Trump’s earlier statement to Reuters that Iran’s “nuclear dust” would be retrieved “very soon.”

Trump had elaborated on his claim, saying: “We’re going to get it together. We’re going to go in with Iran, at a nice leisurely pace, and go down and start excavating with big machinery… We’ll bring it back to the United States.”

The dispute over the status of the Strait of Hormuz represents another critical point of contention. Trump posted on Truth Social Friday that the strategic waterway was “completely open and ready for business and full passage,” while noting that a U.S. blockade on Iranian ports “will remain in full force and effect as it pertains to Iran, only, until such time as our transaction with Iran is 100% complete.”

Ghalibaf firmly rejected this characterization, stating bluntly that “with the continuation of the blockade, the Strait of Hormuz will not remain open.” The Parliament Speaker added that “passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be conducted based on the ‘designated route’ and with ‘Iranian authorization,'” suggesting that Iran maintains control over access to the vital shipping lane.

“Whether the Strait is open or closed and the regulations governing it will be determined by the field, not by social media,” Ghalibaf continued, in what appeared to be a direct rebuke of Trump’s social media announcement. “Media warfare and engineering public opinion are an important part of war, and the Iranian nation is not affected by these tricks.”

A senior Iranian official, speaking anonymously to Reuters on Friday, further confirmed that substantial differences remain between Iran and the U.S. in reaching a comprehensive deal. The official emphasized that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is “conditional on US adherence to the terms of the ceasefire.”

According to the same official, “no agreement has been reached on the details of the nuclear issues,” and significant negotiations are still needed to resolve the outstanding differences. Tehran reportedly hopes that a preliminary agreement could be established in the coming days through Pakistani mediation efforts, potentially extending the current ceasefire to “create space for more talks on lifting sanctions on Iran and securing compensation for war damages.”

In exchange, the official indicated that “Iran will provide assurances to the international community about the peaceful nature of its nuclear program,” while adding that any alternative “narrative about the ongoing talks is a misrepresentation of the situation.”

The public disagreement highlights the fragile nature of negotiations between Iran and the United States, with fundamental differences persisting on key issues including nuclear materials, economic sanctions, and maritime access – all critical factors for regional stability and global energy markets.
