Green Party’s Polanski Faces Scrutiny Over Credential Discrepancies

Green Party leader Zack Polanski is facing mounting pressure after revelations that he made false claims about his professional background, raising questions about his credibility as his party enjoys unprecedented political momentum.

An investigation by The Times revealed that Polanski incorrectly described himself as a “spokesperson” for the British Red Cross during his successful 2022 campaign for the party’s deputy leadership. This claim appeared on both his personal website and on crowdfunding pages where he solicited donations from supporters.

The British Red Cross has categorically denied this representation, stating that Polanski “has not been a spokesperson” for the organization. The charity confirmed it had previously raised concerns about this misrepresentation with Polanski’s team. In response, the Green Party attempted to clarify the situation, explaining that the reference related to Polanski hosting fundraising events and supporting the charity on stage rather than holding any formal communications role.

A second discrepancy involves Polanski’s work as a hypnotherapist. In promotional materials, he advertised himself as a member of the National Council of Hypnotherapy and used the post-nominal letters “MNCH” to signal professional credentials. However, records indicate he was never a full member of the organization, having only held student membership before qualifying.

These revelations have intensified scrutiny of Polanski’s background at a time when his public profile has never been higher. Since becoming leader in September 2025, the 43-year-old has led the Green Party to record polling levels and secured a parliamentary by-election victory in Manchester. His combative style and outsider image have drawn comparisons with Nigel Farage, though his rapid political ascent has left aspects of his background relatively unexamined.

Questions have also emerged about Polanski’s living arrangements. Reports suggest that in recent years, he and his partner stayed on a narrowboat in east London while maintaining another address. This situation has prompted inquiries about his council tax status – ironically, an issue on which Polanski himself has campaigned for reform. The Green Party has declined to comment directly on these arrangements, though sources indicate he pays council tax through a rented residence.

Adding to his challenges, Polanski has faced renewed attention over past statements linked to his hypnotherapy practice. During a 2013 media appearance, he referenced anecdotal evidence suggesting hypnosis could increase breast size. He has since distanced himself from such claims, stating he did not offer this service and was misrepresented in the coverage.

The controversy comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Polanski, as recent polling by More in Common indicates his net favorability ratings have declined significantly in recent days. This drop follows criticism of his response to a violent incident in London’s Golders Green area.

Luke Tryl, executive director of More in Common, noted that the backlash had “very definitely cut through” with voters, suggesting potential long-term damage to Polanski’s public standing.

For a political leader whose appeal has largely rested on authenticity and an unconventional background, these revelations risk undermining his credibility at a crucial juncture in the Green Party’s electoral strategy.

A Green Party spokesperson defended Polanski, stating: “Instead of apologising, the same paper that published an incredibly offensive antisemitic cartoon of Zack Polanski is devoting column inches to bottom of the barrel stories.”

Polanski himself addressed part of the controversy on social media platform X, writing: “I’ve always admired the work of the British Red Cross. From their work to support refugees to their work supporting people in Gaza & conflict zones around the world.” However, he did not directly address the specific allegations regarding his misrepresentation of his relationship with the organization.
