In a stunning legal development that has sent shockwaves through the gospel music community, Grammy-winning singer and pastor Donnie McClurkin faces serious allegations of sexual abuse from his former personal assistant. The lawsuit, filed last Friday in New York County Supreme Court, details claims of years of alleged inappropriate behavior.
Giuseppe Corletto, who began working for McClurkin in 2003, alleges that the gospel star sexually abused him over several years. According to court documents, Corletto was 21 when he initially approached McClurkin at his Long Island church, seeking guidance as he struggled with questions about his sexuality.
The lawsuit states that McClurkin promised to “help deliver him from homosexuality,” establishing what began as a mentor-mentee relationship. This connection eventually led to Corletto’s employment as McClurkin’s personal assistant, a role that included regular travel with the gospel artist.
During his employment, Corletto claims McClurkin conducted “pray the gay away” spiritual sessions in which the pastor allegedly groped him without consent. The lawsuit asserts that these unwanted sexual acts continued for approximately six years, from 2007 to 2015.
Even after Corletto left the church in 2008, the lawsuit alleges McClurkin tracked him down and assaulted him on two separate occasions. According to the legal filing, Corletto struggled to process and speak out about these incidents because of McClurkin’s dual position as both his mentor and employer.
The complaint further alleges that when Corletto informed church staff members about the abuse, no action was taken to address his concerns or protect him from further incidents.
One particularly striking element of the lawsuit references an apologetic email McClurkin allegedly sent to Corletto following what the plaintiff describes as a sexual assault at a Niagara Falls hotel in 2013. In the correspondence, McClurkin purportedly wrote: “I am the actual epitome of a desperate dirty ‘old man’… Pawning and groping a young man who is just looking for a friendship and close plutonic relationship with someone he wants looks to for help, guidance and spirituality. I feel so foul… so stupid.”
McClurkin vehemently denies the allegations. In a statement posted to social media on Wednesday, the singer called the accusations “contrived and untrue,” emphasizing the importance of truth in such serious matters.
“Sexual violence, in any form, is a real and painful reality for many and not to be used frivolously,” McClurkin wrote. “True survivors deserve to be heard, protected, and supported! At the same time, the TRUTH matters! And the TRUTH has not been told!”
The pastor stated he has “always sought to conduct myself with integrity, transparency, godly care, and responsibility in the fulfillment of my christian life and duties.” While acknowledging he has not yet been officially served with the legal complaint, McClurkin indicated he is “proactively cooperating fully with the appropriate processes” and will “vigorously defend to the fullest against this defamatory and baseless lawsuit.”
Thomas Giuffra, Corletto’s attorney, told NBC News that the lawsuit seeks compensation, closure, and “some measure of justice” for his client.
The allegations come as a significant blow to McClurkin’s reputation as a celebrated figure in gospel music. The pastor has amassed three Grammy Awards throughout his career and has been a consistent presence on Billboard’s Christian, gospel, and R&B charts. Five of his albums have topped the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart, including the acclaimed “Live in London and More…” and “We All Are One (Live in Detroit).” His 2005 single “I Call You Faithful” held the number one position on the Hot Gospel Chart for five consecutive weeks.
The case highlights ongoing tensions within religious communities regarding approaches to sexuality and raises questions about accountability and power dynamics in pastoral relationships. As the legal process unfolds, both the gospel music industry and McClurkin’s congregation will be watching closely for developments in this deeply troubling case.
