Gabon Government Denies Ex-First Lady’s Torture Allegations

Gabonese officials have vehemently rejected allegations of torture and mistreatment made by former First Lady Sylvia Bongo Ondimba in her recent interview with France 24, dismissing them as fabrications designed to mislead the international community.

During a press conference held on Sunday, March 8, Minister of Communication and Media Germain Biahodjow condemned what he described as a coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at tarnishing Gabon’s institutional reputation. The minister expressed particular frustration with Western media outlets for broadcasting these claims without adequate verification.

“These allegations are completely unfounded and represent a deliberate attempt to distort the truth,” Biahodjow stated. “The former First Lady, her son, and all co-defendants have been treated with full respect for human dignity and in accordance with our legal procedures throughout their detention.”

The government’s strong response comes after Sylvia Bongo Ondimba, speaking from London where she currently resides in exile, claimed that she and her son Noureddin Bongo Valentin endured abuse during their twenty-month detention following the 2023 coup that ousted her husband, former President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

In a move that signals growing tension between the transitional government and international media, Biahodjow indicated that authorities might consider suspending media organizations operating within Gabon that continue to broadcast what they consider false allegations. This potential restriction has raised concerns among press freedom advocates who monitor the Central African nation’s democratic transition.

The case highlights the complex political dynamics in post-coup Gabon. Last year’s military takeover ended the Bongo family’s 56-year dynastic rule over the oil-rich nation, with Ali Bongo’s father Omar having governed for 42 years before his son took power in 2009.

Following the coup, both Sylvia Bongo and her son faced serious legal charges related to embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds. In November 2023, a Gabonese court sentenced them in absentia to twenty years imprisonment, a ruling the former First Lady continues to contest.

Minister Biahodjow emphasized that the transitional government, led by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, had previously demonstrated clemency by granting former President Ali Bongo his freedom as a gesture toward national reconciliation. This action, according to the minister, contradicts allegations of systematic mistreatment.

“President Oligui Nguema has shown his commitment to healing our nation through his treatment of the former president,” Biahodjow noted. “The allegations made by the former First Lady stand in stark contrast to the measured approach our transitional government has consistently demonstrated.”

The dispute occurs against a backdrop of Gabon’s efforts to reshape its governance following decades of Bongo family rule. The country remains a significant oil producer in Central Africa, with petroleum accounting for approximately 80% of exports and one-third of GDP.

Political analysts note that the transitional government faces the delicate task of addressing alleged corruption from the previous administration while establishing legitimacy on the international stage. The public confrontation with the former First Lady represents one of several challenges as the country navigates its political transition.

Human rights organizations have called for independent investigations into the allegations, while diplomatic sources indicate that Western nations are closely monitoring the situation as they calibrate their relationships with Gabon’s new leadership.

For now, Sylvia Bongo Ondimba remains in the United Kingdom, continuing to maintain her innocence while the Gabonese government stands firm in its rejection of her claims.
