In a stunning turn of events, federal prosecutors have charged a former congressional staffer with fabricating an elaborate political attack that gained national attention over the summer.
Natalie Greene, 26, of Ocean City, New Jersey, appeared in court Wednesday facing charges of conspiracy to perpetrate a hoax and making false statements to federal law enforcement. Greene, who worked for Republican Congressman Jeff Van Drew, allegedly orchestrated a fake assault in which she claimed three armed men attacked her because of her association with the Trump-supporting congressman.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Greene and an accomplice staged the incident on July 23 at a nature preserve in Egg Harbor Township. The accomplice called 911, reporting that attackers with a gun had targeted Greene specifically because of her employment with Van Drew, a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump.
“They were attacking her. They were like talking about politics and stuff. They were like calling her names,” the friend told the emergency dispatcher, according to court documents.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Greene lying in a wooded area with her shirt pulled over her head and her hands and feet bound with zip ties. Officers noted several cuts on her face, neck, chest, and shoulder. Most disturbingly, anti-Trump and anti-Van Drew slogans had been written in black marker across her stomach and back.
Greene maintained her story during initial interviews with both local police and FBI agents. However, prosecutors say the investigation quickly revealed inconsistencies in her account.
A search of Greene’s Maserati uncovered zip ties and duct tape matching those used in the alleged attack. More damning evidence emerged when investigators examined her cell phone, which revealed she had been following online communities dedicated to “bodymods” and “scarification.” The phone also contained directions to a body-modification artist’s studio in Pennsylvania.
When questioned by authorities, the artist produced messages from Greene requesting specific scar patterns. Prosecutors say photos taken after the procedure matched the lacerations documented when she was found in the woods.
The case has sent shockwaves through political circles in New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District, which Van Drew has represented since 2019. Van Drew himself made headlines in 2020 when he switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party and pledged his “undying support” to then-President Trump.
In a statement following Greene’s arrest, Van Drew’s office said he was “deeply saddened” about the incident and that their “thoughts and prayers” were with Greene. The statement added, “we hope she’s getting the care she needs.” Van Drew’s office has not yet clarified whether Greene was still employed by the congressman at the time of the alleged hoax.
This case emerges amid heightened tensions in American political discourse, where accusations of politically motivated violence have become increasingly common. Law enforcement agencies have reported a rise in threats against elected officials from both major parties in recent years, making the verification of such claims a priority.
Louis Barbone, Greene’s attorney, emphasized his client’s presumption of innocence under the law. “At the age of 26, my client served her community working full time to serve the constituents of the Congressman with loyalty and fidelity. She did that while being a fulltime student,” Barbone said in a statement.
Following her court appearance, Greene was released on a $200,000 bond. If convicted, she could face significant penalties for making false statements to federal investigators, a charge that carries potential prison time.
Federal authorities have not indicated what might have motivated Greene to stage such an elaborate hoax, and the investigation remains ongoing. The case is expected to proceed to trial in the coming months, barring any plea agreement.
