Summer Worden, who previously claimed her ex-wife NASA astronaut Col. Anne McClain committed the first crime in space, has admitted to fabricating the entire story. Worden has pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators after falsely alleging that McClain illegally accessed her bank account while aboard the International Space Station.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Texas announced that Worden now faces serious legal consequences, including a potential five-year prison sentence and fines up to $250,000. She remains free on bond while awaiting sentencing scheduled for February 12, 2026.

The case began in 2019 when Worden claimed McClain had guessed her password and unlawfully accessed her financial information during a NASA mission. The accusation prompted investigations by both NASA’s Office of Inspector General and the Federal Trade Commission, marking what would have been an unprecedented criminal case involving space.

However, the investigation revealed a different story. Prosecutors determined that the account had been established well before the alleged incident and that both women had used it throughout their marriage. Court documents showed that Worden had provided McClain with access to her financial records “from at least 2015, including her login credentials,” directly contradicting her claims.

McClain, who consistently maintained her innocence throughout the ordeal, expressed relief at the vindication. In a statement to The New York Times, she said: “Ms. Worden intentionally, and with full knowledge of the truth, presented a story to federal investigators and to the media with the intention of harm.” McClain added that “from the outset, there was no evidence supporting her claims, and overwhelming evidence disproving them.”

The false allegations emerged during a particularly contentious period for the former couple, who were navigating a difficult divorce and custody battle over Worden’s young son. Their marriage was officially dissolved in January 2020, but the legal aftermath of Worden’s claims continued.

The case cast an unwelcome spotlight on McClain, one of NASA’s most distinguished astronauts. Her impressive credentials include service as a former Army helicopter pilot and Iraq War veteran, as well as being a West Point graduate with multiple advanced degrees in aerospace engineering, international relations, and strategic studies.

McClain joined NASA’s astronaut corps in 2013 and has since built a remarkable career. Her first mission to the International Space Station took place in 2018-2019, and she later returned as commander of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-10 mission, which operated from March through August 2025.

The incident highlights the personal challenges astronauts can face while serving in high-profile positions. Despite the distraction of these false allegations, McClain continued her work with NASA and maintained her professional standing within the organization.

The case also raises questions about the potential for actual crimes in space as human presence beyond Earth expands. While this particular incident proved fabricated, legal experts have noted that as more people spend time in orbit and beyond, space law will become increasingly important.

This situation serves as a reminder of how personal conflicts can escalate into serious legal matters with far-reaching consequences. For Worden, those consequences now include a federal conviction and potential imprisonment for making false statements to law enforcement.

NASA has not issued additional comments regarding the resolution of the case, likely aiming to put the matter behind them as they continue their mission-focused operations. For McClain, the conclusion of this case represents vindication after years of having her reputation unfairly questioned.

As the February 2026 sentencing date approaches, the legal system will determine the appropriate punishment for what amounted to false allegations that briefly suggested the commission of humanity’s first crime in space.
