Nonprofit Fact-Checks Energy Secretary’s Climate Change Denial Claims

A nonprofit media organization has challenged statements made by U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright regarding climate science, highlighting what it calls a deliberate effort to misrepresent scientific consensus on extreme weather events.

Crooked Ideas, a nonprofit media company, recently released a video addressing Wright’s claims that weather events have not become more severe in recent years, directly contradicting established scientific evidence from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The video features Wright, a former CEO of Liberty Energy, a hydraulic fracturing company, incorrectly stating that the IPCC hasn’t linked increasing extreme weather events to climate change or declared a climate emergency.

“Like none of that is true, and none of that is claimed in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report,” Wright says in the clip, as Wall Street Journal opinion columnist Kim Strassel appears to laugh in agreement.

Jon Millstein, senior editor for Crooked Ideas, responds to Wright’s statement by displaying a direct quote from the IPCC report that explicitly contradicts the Energy Secretary’s claims: “It is an established fact that human-induced greenhouse gas emissions have led to an increased frequency and/or intensity of some weather and climate extremes since pre-industrial times, in particular temperature extremes.”

The contradiction highlights growing concern among environmental advocates about the administration’s approach to climate science. As global temperatures continue to rise, scientists have documented more severe heat waves, hurricanes, and other extreme weather events, resulting in increased fatalities, property destruction, and rising insurance costs.

Environmental experts note that the IPCC and other scientific bodies have repeatedly demonstrated that rising global temperatures are primarily caused by heat-trapping pollution from human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels including oil, coal, and natural gas.

“It’s scary to see how hard Trump’s team is working to convince his followers that science isn’t real, climate change is good, and gasoline is God,” Millstein says in the video.

The appointment of Wright, who founded Liberty Energy, to the position of Energy Secretary has raised eyebrows among environmental advocates. According to Yahoo Finance, Liberty Energy “provides hydraulic fracturing services and related technologies to onshore oil and natural gas exploration and production companies in North America.” Critics question whether someone with such direct ties to the fossil fuel industry can objectively address climate policy.

Notably, Millstein points out that Wright’s LinkedIn profile at the time of the video still listed him as founder, CEO, and chairman of Liberty Energy, with no mention of his role as Energy Secretary.

Throughout the video, Millstein displays headlines from major news outlets including the New York Times, NPR, and the BBC documenting the administration’s efforts to roll back environmental regulations. These rollbacks have been viewed by environmental advocates as favoring the fossil fuel industry at the expense of climate action.

The controversy comes at a time when insurance companies are reassessing their coverage in regions repeatedly hit by climate-related disasters, and communities worldwide are experiencing unprecedented weather patterns, from extended droughts to catastrophic flooding.

Public response to the video has been largely supportive of Crooked Ideas’ fact-checking efforts. One commenter sarcastically noted, “I’m sure the, uh, former fracking CEO has an unbiased view on greenhouse gases and climate change.”

As extreme weather events continue to make headlines across the globe, the debate over climate science and appropriate policy responses remains highly charged, with significant implications for energy policy, environmental regulations, and global climate action.

  1. As someone with an interest in the mining and commodities sector, I’ll be following this story closely. The implications could be significant, given the Energy Secretary’s past ties to the oil and gas industry. I hope the reporting provides a balanced and objective analysis of the facts.

    • Yes, it’s important to understand any potential conflicts of interest or biases that may be influencing the government’s position on these issues. A thorough, fact-based examination is warranted.

  2. This seems like an important issue related to energy policy and climate change. I appreciate the fact-checking effort by the nonprofit organization to scrutinize the government’s claims. It’s vital that we have an open and honest public discourse on these complex topics.

I agree, transparency and accountability are crucial when it comes to policymaking on climate and energy issues. I look forward to seeing more details on the specific claims being challenged and the underlying evidence.

Interesting to see a former official challenge the government’s claims. I’m curious to learn more about the ‘disturbing implications’ mentioned in the headline. What specific issues is the former official raising concerns about?

    • Michael H. Brown on

The article summary suggests the official is disputing the government’s stance on the link between climate change and extreme weather events. I’d like to understand the arguments on both sides of this debate.
