Former Northamptonshire police chief Nick Adderley faces serious fraud charges following allegations that he fabricated his military service record and educational background during his application to join the police force, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The 59-year-old Adderley has been charged with fraud and misconduct in public office, with prosecutors alleging he falsely claimed to be a decorated Navy officer with the rank of lieutenant commander in the Royal Navy. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) reports that Adderley also claimed to have served in the Falklands War and asserted his entitlement to wear associated service medals.

Adderley is scheduled to appear at Westminster magistrates court on November 10 to face these charges, which carry a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years if he is convicted of fraud.

The alleged offenses span a six-year period between 2018 and 2024, with investigators focusing particularly on claims made in his curriculum vitae when applying for the Northamptonshire police chief constable position in June 2018.

This case has sent shockwaves through UK policing circles, raising questions about vetting procedures for senior law enforcement officials. The allegations are particularly damaging as they involve a figure who reached the highest rank in a police force, responsible for upholding truth and integrity in public service.

During a misconduct hearing earlier this year, which resulted in Adderley’s dismissal without notice in June, evidence emerged that he had worn a South Atlantic Medal (SAM). This prestigious decoration is specifically awarded to British military personnel and civilians who served during the 1982 Falklands conflict with Argentina.

The tribunal heard damning testimony that Adderley’s claimed decade of Royal Navy service was actually limited to just two years. Additionally, he allegedly fabricated attending the prestigious Britannia Royal Naval College for four years, an institution known for training the UK’s naval officers.

In what appears to be an extensive pattern of deception, the hearing was told Adderley had never visited Haiti, despite claiming experience as a military negotiator in the Caribbean nation.

These allegations emerge against a backdrop of increased scrutiny of police forces across the UK, with public trust in law enforcement already strained following several high-profile misconduct cases in recent years. The charges against such a senior figure may further undermine confidence in police leadership.

The case also highlights growing concerns about credential verification in public sector appointments, particularly for positions of significant authority and responsibility. Questions will likely be raised about how such alleged misrepresentations could have gone undetected during the vetting process for such a high-ranking position.

The IOPC’s involvement underscores the seriousness with which these allegations are being treated, reflecting the importance placed on integrity and honesty within police leadership.

As the case progresses toward its November court date, it is expected to draw significant attention from both the policing community and the wider public, who rely on the truthfulness and integrity of those charged with upholding the law.

The Northamptonshire Police force has not yet commented on plans to review their hiring and vetting procedures in light of these charges against their former chief.
