Government Reaffirms $36 Million Sugar Support Package Amid Misinformation

Fiji’s government has moved to dispel growing concerns among sugarcane farmers, confirming that its financial support package for the 2025 crop season remains fully intact despite circulating misinformation on social media platforms.

Minister for Agriculture and Sugar Industry Tomasi Tunabuna announced that the cabinet has approved over $36 million as part of the government’s commitment to maintaining the guaranteed cane price of $85 per tonne for farmers.

“The $36,535,652.27 is equivalent to $22.00 per tonne and comprises of $10.07 per tonne paid in the third cane payment, $6.77 per tonne to be paid in the fourth cane payment in May 2026, and $5.16 per tonne to be paid as the final payment in October 2026,” Tunabuna explained.

The Ministry emphasized that the $22 per tonne top-up is entirely government-funded and should not be confused with payments from the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC). The FSC’s contribution will only be determined after the completion of sugar sales in international markets.

Recent weeks have seen an uptick in misleading claims on various social media platforms, with some political figures allegedly stirring unnecessary concern among the farming community. Ministry officials are urging farmers to rely solely on information from official government channels to avoid confusion.

Sugar remains one of Fiji’s most crucial agricultural exports and a significant source of livelihood for thousands of families across the country. The industry has faced challenges in recent years, including declining production, aging farmer populations, and increasing competition in global markets.

Industry analysts note that government support has become increasingly vital to maintain farmer participation in the sector. Dr. Sanjay Kumar, an agricultural economist at the University of the South Pacific, explained that “the guaranteed price mechanism provides essential income security for farmers who might otherwise abandon sugarcane cultivation for more immediately profitable crops.”

The payment structure has been designed to provide staged financial support to farmers throughout the harvest cycle. This approach helps maintain cash flow for farming operations while allowing the government to distribute its financial commitment across multiple budget periods.

In addition to the price support package, Tunabuna highlighted that the government has implemented several other initiatives to bolster the sugar industry. These include specific payments for manual harvesting operations, various farmer support schemes, and technical assistance programs aimed at improving productivity.

“Our commitment to the sugar sector goes beyond mere price guarantees,” Tunabuna stated. “We’re implementing a comprehensive approach to strengthen every aspect of the industry, from field to factory.”

The FSC, which operates Fiji’s sugar mills and handles marketing of the final product, has been undergoing its own restructuring efforts to improve operational efficiency. The corporation has faced financial challenges in recent years but remains central to the industry’s future.

Regional agricultural officers have been instructed to conduct information sessions in key sugarcane growing areas to ensure farmers understand the payment schedule and can plan accordingly for the upcoming season.

Industry stakeholders welcome the government’s clarification, noting that confidence in the support system is essential as farmers make planting and harvesting decisions. With preparations for the 2025 season already underway in many regions, the reassurance comes at a critical time for the industry.

The sugar sector in Fiji directly employs approximately 200,000 people and indirectly supports many more, underscoring its significance to the national economy and rural development. Maintaining stability in farmer incomes remains a priority as the country works to modernize and strengthen this traditional industry.
