In a swift response to circulating rumors, Nollywood actor Mike Godson has firmly denied allegations that he impregnated Afropop singer and global music sensation Yemi Alade.

The controversy began when an X (formerly Twitter) user posted the unsubstantiated claim: “Nigerian Nollywood Actor Mike Godson has opened up to the media saying he is responsible for the child Yemi Alade is carrying. She is expecting a child.”

The post quickly generated buzz across social media platforms, though initial reaction remained somewhat contained as neither of the celebrities immediately addressed the speculation.

Godson eventually broke his silence with a strongly worded statement. “People mistake my silence for weakness,” he wrote. The actor revealed this wasn’t his first experience with false media narratives, recalling a previous incident when a blog falsely reported he was expecting twins with an American woman.

“Some years ago, Linda Ikeji put out a false narrative about me, misleading the public, saying I was expecting twins with an American woman, knowing full well the legal implications of such false allegations, but I let that slide,” Godson stated. He concluded his response with what appeared to be a warning: “And now, my attention has been drawn to this. Why do people just create problems for themselves? What kind of human beings are these? Ok, we shall see.”

Alade, whose hits have earned her international recognition in the competitive Afrobeats genre, has maintained her characteristic silence on the matter, neither confirming nor denying the rumors.

This isn’t the first time the “Johnny” singer has faced unfounded claims about her personal life. In March, another X account falsely claimed she had been diagnosed with a serious illness that threatened to end her career. More recently, a different user fabricated a story claiming Alade had announced an HIV-positive diagnosis on Instagram, complete with fictional details about how she allegedly contracted the virus.

Industry observers note these incidents reflect a troubling trend in social media where engagement metrics often outweigh ethical considerations. The rise of monetization features on platforms like X, which rewards high-engagement accounts with revenue, has incentivized some users to manufacture sensational content regardless of its veracity.

“What we’re seeing is a direct result of social media’s attention economy,” says Nkechi Ogbonna, a digital media analyst based in Lagos. “When platforms tie financial rewards to engagement, truth becomes secondary to virality. Celebrities make easy targets because posts about them naturally attract more views.”

The Nigerian entertainment industry has long grappled with rumor-mongering, but digital platforms have amplified both the reach and potential harm of unverified claims. Public figures must now regularly contend with baseless rumors that can spread globally within hours.

While some celebrities choose to address false claims immediately, others like Alade opt to maintain silence, focusing instead on their creative work. This strategy sometimes prevents additional oxygen being given to fabricated stories, though it doesn’t always stop their spread.

Digital rights advocates have called for stronger accountability measures on social media platforms, arguing that current content moderation approaches fail to adequately address defamatory content, particularly in African markets where oversight is often less rigorous than in Western countries.

As the entertainment industry continues to navigate these challenges, the incident underscores the complex interplay between social media, celebrity culture, and the growing commercialization of digital attention – often at the expense of truth and personal dignity.
