Trump’s Speech to House Republicans Riddled with False Claims
President Donald Trump abandoned his teleprompter in favor of impromptu remarks during a Tuesday address to House Republicans, delivering a speech that fact-checkers identified as containing at least 18 inaccurate statements on topics ranging from crime statistics to election results.
In his meandering address, Trump made numerous claims that have been previously debunked by fact-checkers and official records.
When discussing Washington, DC’s crime situation, Trump falsely claimed the capital hasn’t had a single murder “in seven months” following a federal takeover of law enforcement. Police statistics and Washington Post tracking show dozens of murders during this period, including three in late December alone.
Trump further declared Washington “the safest city in the country,” a claim crime data expert Jeff Asher dismissed as “obviously not true.” While the capital has experienced a decrease in shootings over the past two years, Asher noted that more than 100 people had been shot there in the past 4.5 months.
On the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, Trump falsely claimed the House select committee that investigated the attack “didn’t report” that he had urged protesters to act “peacefully and patriotically.” The committee’s final report explicitly mentioned this phrase but noted it contradicted the remaining 50 minutes of Trump’s speech, which focused on election falsehoods and exhortations to “fight.”
Trump also perpetuated the debunked claim that then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected an offer of 10,000 National Guard troops before the Capitol attack. No evidence supports this assertion, and as president, Trump—not Pelosi—had authority over DC National Guard deployment.
In footage recorded by Pelosi’s filmmaker daughter Alexandra on January 6, the then-Speaker expressed frustration at inadequate Capitol security but never admitted to rejecting National Guard assistance. In fact, she questioned why the Guard wasn’t present “to begin with,” contradicting Trump’s narrative.
Trump repeated his false claim that the 2020 election “was rigged” despite his legitimate loss to Joe Biden in what officials have confirmed was a free and fair election.
The former president falsely stated he won Minnesota, though he lost the state in 2016, 2020, and 2024. He suggested these losses resulted from “corrupt” elections, providing no evidence for this assertion.
On voting methods, Trump claimed the United States is “the only country that votes by mail, essentially,” ignoring that dozens of countries—including Canada, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Spain—use mail-in voting systems.
Trump misrepresented a commission co-chaired by former President Jimmy Carter, claiming it recommended against mail-in voting. While the 2005 report identified absentee ballots as vulnerable to fraud, it also highlighted Oregon’s successful safeguards and called for further research rather than abandonment of the practice.
Regarding the 2024 election, Trump characterized President Biden’s withdrawal from the race as “very unfair” and exaggerated his polling lead, claiming he was “beating Joe by 30 points” before Biden was replaced by Kamala Harris. Most polls showed Trump’s lead in single digits, sometimes within the margin of error.
Trump’s economic claims were equally misleading. He falsely stated he inherited “the greatest inflation in history,” though the 9.1% rate under Biden was far below the 23.7% record set in 1920. By Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, inflation had decreased to 3.0%.
The president made mathematically impossible claims about prescription drug prices, saying his policies reduced costs by “thousands of percent.” As experts note, a reduction exceeding 100% would mean consumers would be paid to obtain medications.
Trump also dramatically inflated investment figures, claiming “$18 trillion being invested in the United States”—nearly double the White House’s own exaggerated estimate of $9.6 trillion.
As these and other fact-checked statements demonstrate, Trump’s unscripted remarks to House Republicans consisted largely of recycled falsehoods and significant exaggerations that have become familiar features of his public addresses.
