In the wake of recent document releases related to Jeffrey Epstein, a photograph from 2000 showing former President Donald Trump and then-President Bill Clinton laughing together at the U.S. Open has been circulating online with misleading claims that it depicts Trump inappropriately touching Clinton.

The image, which shows the two men laughing with Trump’s hand appearing to be in motion near Clinton, has been miscaptioned across social media platforms including Reddit and TikTok. These posts falsely claim the photograph captures Trump “grabbing Clinton’s privates” during their encounter.

William Vasta, the White House photographer who captured the moment, has directly refuted these claims. “I didn’t see any inappropriate contact there,” Vasta told Snopes in a text message. “Trump was simply signaling to others in the room to gather for a group photo that included him, his guests, and Clinton. What you’re seeing in the still photo is just an outtake between handshakes and gestures.”

Vasta emphasized that the setting was public and professional: “The room was full of White House staff, guests with their spouses, and family members, and everyone behaved professionally and respectfully.”

The original photograph, available through Reuters and Wikimedia Commons, comes from the Clinton Presidential Library’s archives. It was released in September 2016 following a Freedom of Information Act request from Politico. The official caption simply describes the image as “Donald Trump laughing with then U.S. President Bill Clinton at the U.S. Open in Flushing, New York.”

Other images from the same event show the men shaking hands and standing alongside Trump’s now-wife, Melania, and others in attendance, including Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kylie Bax. All photographs from the occasion depict a cordial, public interaction at the heavily attended sporting event.

Bax confirmed to Politico in 2016 that she was a “close longtime friend” of Trump’s and that Clinton had come to Trump’s box to greet him. “I actually think Bill was in another box and he came by to say hello to Donald,” she said. “Melania is also a friend and we all went to tennis together and had a great day.”

The misleading characterization of the photograph gained traction amid renewed interest in Epstein’s connections following the U.S. House Oversight Committee’s release of documents relating to the late financier and convicted sex offender. These materials included emails between Jeffrey Epstein and various associates, including communications that mentioned Trump.

One particular email that fueled speculation was from Mark Epstein to his brother Jeffrey, suggesting he ask former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon “if Putin has the photos of Trump blowing Bubba,” apparently referring to oral sex. While some speculated “Bubba” might be Clinton, Mark Epstein later issued a statement denying this: “The reference to ‘Bubba’ in this correspondence is not, in any way, a reference to former President Bill Clinton.”

The 2000 interaction between Clinton and Trump occurred during a period when the two men maintained cordial relations. Earlier that same year, Clinton had attended a Democratic fundraiser for Representative Ed Towns of New York at Trump Tower. Towns later recalled in a 2016 interview that Trump monopolized Clinton’s time at the event: “Donald had him in the corner and tied him up. I’ll never forget that moment.”

The miscaptioned photograph highlights the ongoing challenge of contextualizing historical images in today’s polarized political climate. Without proper verification and context, even authentic photographs can be used to spread misinformation when accompanied by false descriptions.

While Trump and Epstein’s connections have been the subject of numerous investigations and fact-checks over the years, this particular image does not show any inappropriate contact between Trump and Clinton, but rather a moment of friendly interaction at a public sporting event in 2000, years before they would become political adversaries.
