Indian Origin Confirmed for Gunman in Bondi Beach Attack, Contradicting Social Media Claims
False information about the nationality of the Bondi Beach gunmen has spread rapidly across social media platforms, with numerous posts incorrectly identifying them as Pakistani or Afghan nationals. An investigation by authorities has confirmed that the gunmen had no connection to either country.
The December 14, 2025 attack at a Jewish Hanukkah celebration in Bondi Beach resulted in 15 deaths and dozens of injuries when Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed opened fire at the beachside park. Sajid was killed by police during the incident, while Naveed remains hospitalized under police guard, facing 59 charges including 15 counts of murder.
Within hours of the shooting, social media platforms were flooded with posts claiming the attackers were from Pakistan. “BREAKING: One of the terrorists involved in the horrific attack at Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia, has been identified as Naveed Akram from Pakistan,” stated one widely-shared Facebook post.
Another post falsely claimed: “Sajid Akram, 50, arrived from Lahore, Pakistan, in 1998 on a student visa, chasing education and opportunity in Australia, according to reporting by the Sydney Morning Herald and statements from Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke.”
Other social media users, particularly accounts based in Pakistan, pushed an alternative narrative claiming the attackers were Afghan nationals. One post asserted, “Bondi Attacker Identified as Afghan National Amid False Pakistan Links,” while another incorrectly stated the shooter was “Naveed Akram (32) … of Afghan origin,” also erroneously reporting his age.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke clarified on December 15 that Naveed Akram is an Australian-born citizen. Burke confirmed that the father, Sajid, had moved to Australia more than two decades ago but did not specify his country of origin or nationality in his initial statement.
Indian police have subsequently revealed that Sajid Akram was an Indian citizen originally from Hyderabad. Reuters journalists have corroborated this information after speaking directly with Sajid’s relatives in the Indian city.
Additional verification comes from Filipino broadcaster ABS-CBN, which published passport details of the gunmen following reports they had traveled to the Philippines’ southern island of Mindanao in November 2025. Sajid Akram’s passport lists his birthplace as Hyderabad, Telangana, while his son’s Australian passport confirms he was born in Camperdown, Sydney.
This case represents one of several instances of misinformation surrounding the attack. AAP FactCheck previously debunked an artificially generated video falsely showing Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announcing visa cancellations for Pakistani nationals in response to the terrorist attack.
The rapid spread of false nationality claims regarding the attackers highlights the ongoing challenge of misinformation during crisis events. Such misinformation can potentially inflame tensions between communities and nations, particularly in cases involving terrorism.
Authorities continue to investigate the motives behind the attack, which targeted a Jewish holiday celebration. The incident has prompted increased security measures at religious and community gatherings across Australia, while also raising questions about the detection and prevention of violent extremism.
As the legal proceedings against Naveed Akram move forward, officials have urged the public to rely on official sources of information rather than unverified social media claims that may contain factual errors or deliberate misinformation.
