South Korean political circles were shaken yesterday as prosecutors launched an investigation into a former organized crime figure accused of fabricating evidence against opposition leader Lee Jae Myung.

The case centers on a man identified only by his surname Kim, a former member of a criminal organization, who allegedly made false claims linking Lee to gangster activities during his time as mayor of Seongnam city. Kim’s allegations had been extensively circulated among conservative media outlets over recent months.

According to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, investigators are examining whether Kim deliberately manufactured evidence as part of a coordinated smear campaign against Lee, who currently serves as the chairman of the Democratic Party and remains a prominent political figure after narrowly losing the 2022 presidential election.

“We are treating this matter with utmost seriousness,” said a spokesperson from the prosecutors’ office, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The fabrication of evidence against public officials undermines the democratic process and public trust in institutions.”

The investigation was triggered after forensic analysis revealed inconsistencies in documents Kim had provided to media outlets. These documents allegedly contained fabricated meeting logs and manipulated photographs suggesting Lee maintained inappropriate relationships with organized crime syndicates during his mayoral tenure from 2010 to 2018.

Lee’s legal team welcomed the investigation, calling it “long overdue.” In a statement released to the press, they noted: “Chairman Lee has endured months of character assassination based on fiction. We have maintained from the beginning that these allegations were fabricated with clear political motivations.”

The case highlights the increasingly contentious nature of South Korean politics, where personal attacks and allegations of corruption have become common weapons in the political arsenal. Political analysts point to the deepening polarization between the ruling People Power Party and the opposition Democratic Party as a driving force behind such tactics.

Professor Park Jin-ho of Seoul National University’s Department of Political Science explained: “What we’re witnessing is the weaponization of judicial processes for political ends. Both major parties have engaged in this behavior, but the sophistication of these operations appears to be increasing.”

The timing of the investigation carries particular significance as South Korea prepares for parliamentary elections next year. Lee, who has consistently maintained strong approval ratings despite numerous controversies, is seen as a key figure in the opposition’s strategy to regain legislative control.

The ruling People Power Party responded cautiously to news of the investigation. Party spokesperson Choi Min-hee stated, “We respect the independence of the prosecutor’s office and will await the results of their work. However, we urge that all investigations be conducted without political bias.”

This case emerges against a backdrop of ongoing tension between the prosecution service and President Yoon Suk Yeol’s administration. Since taking office, Yoon—a former prosecutor general—has faced criticism for allegedly using the justice system to target political opponents. The investigation into Kim’s false claims could be viewed as an attempt by the prosecution to demonstrate impartiality.

Media experts note that the incident also raises questions about journalistic standards in South Korea. Several major newspapers and television networks reported Kim’s allegations extensively without sufficient verification, according to media watchdog organizations.

“There’s been a disturbing trend of news outlets rushing to publish sensational allegations without proper fact-checking, especially when those allegations target political figures,” said Kim Yeon-soo, director of the Korea Media Ethics Foundation.

If convicted of fabricating evidence and defamation, Kim could face up to five years in prison under South Korean law. The prosecutors’ office indicated the investigation would be comprehensive, examining not only Kim’s actions but also whether others were involved in coordinating the alleged smear campaign.

As the investigation unfolds, political observers suggest it may significantly impact public perception heading into next year’s critical election cycle, potentially reshaping the narrative around Lee Jae Myung and influencing voter sentiment toward both major political parties.
