Diddy’s Mother Denounces “Lies” in Netflix Documentary Series

Janice Combs has strongly refuted allegations made against her and her son Sean “Diddy” Combs in the recently released Netflix documentary series “Sean Combs: The Reckoning.” In a statement to Deadline, she characterized the four-part series as containing deliberate inaccuracies about her son’s upbringing and family life.

“In the documentary, I am portrayed as an abusive parent,” she stated. “This is untrue. As I have stated previously, I was a single mother, raising my son, I held three and even four jobs in an attempt to provide a comfortable upbringing and quality education for my child. I raised Sean with love and hard work, not abuse.”

The documentary, which debuted on December 2, was produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, a longtime rival of Diddy in the music industry. It features several controversial claims about the Combs family, including allegations from Diddy’s childhood friend Tim Patterson that Janice administered severe “beatings” to her son.

“She held back nothing,” Patterson claimed in the documentary. “His beatings made me scared. Right? I got beatings, now. But when he got his beatings, it wasn’t no … it wasn’t a joking thing.”

Janice Combs categorically rejected these characterizations, stating that Patterson’s comments were “not truthful and salacious to promote the series.” She countered that her memories of raising Sean were “of a respectful and a diligent child and teenager” and described her son as “an industrious, goal-oriented, over-achiever.”

The documentary also contains a particularly explosive allegation from Kirk Burrowes, co-founder of Bad Boy Entertainment, who claimed he witnessed Diddy slap his mother and call her a profanity following questioning about the 1991 charity basketball game tragedy at City College of New York. Nine people died in a stampede at that event, which marked a dark moment early in Diddy’s career.

“I saw Janice question Sean,” Burrowes stated in the documentary. “He’s going into this music business thing, he just left school, and now, this extreme tragedy has occurred. She’s like, ‘Did he make the right decision?’ And I saw him put his hands on her, call her a b—-, and slapped her.”

Janice vehemently denied this account, calling it “inaccurate and patently false.” She characterized Burrowes’ claims as an attempt to “incorporate fake narratives to further his prior failed and current attempt to gain what was never his, Bad Boy Records.”

This documentary arrives at a particularly challenging time for the Combs family. Sean “Diddy” Combs, once one of music’s most powerful moguls with a business empire spanning music, fashion, and spirits, is currently incarcerated in New York following his conviction on federal charges of transportation to engage in prostitution earlier this year.

Representatives for Combs have dismissed the Netflix series as a “shameful hit piece,” suggesting that many featured individuals have “longstanding personal grievances, financial motives, or credibility issues.” The statement from Diddy’s spokesperson Juda Engelmayer further claimed the documentary “was built around a one-sided narrative led by a publicly admitted adversary.”

The documentary’s release follows years of mounting allegations against Diddy, including multiple civil lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct. The series includes interviews with various accusers, former associates, and industry insiders, along with previously unseen footage.

Netflix has not yet publicly responded to the Combs family’s criticisms of the documentary series, which has generated significant viewership and public discussion since its release.

In her statement, Janice Combs emphasized her son’s support throughout their relationship, describing him as “a dutiful son always ensuring that I was cared for and vigilantly managing my medical care, as well as providing financial support.” She concluded by requesting “that these distortions, falsehoods and misleading statements be publicly retracted.”
