Death Metal Band Suffocation Refutes Ex-Drummer’s “Abusive Drug Addicts” Accusations

Renowned New York-based death metal outfit Suffocation has publicly denied allegations made by their former drummer Eric Morotti, who claimed he left the band due to a “toxic work environment” populated by “abusive drug addicts.”

The controversy erupted when Morotti took to Instagram on his birthday last week to announce his departure from the group after approximately a decade behind the drum kit. In his emotionally charged post, Morotti stated: “Today. On my. Birthday. I have chosen to step away from [Suffocation] to prolong my health, myself. My integrity. I will not work with toxic, abusive drug addicts. Let alone allow them to boss me around.”

Morotti continued by alleging mistreatment during his tenure with the band: “I’ve been belittled and stepped all over for too long.” He contrasted his experience with Suffocation to his current work with death metal group Sanguisugabogg, which he described as “a real FAMILY: no egos, no power trips. Just bros that love music and being together.”

The accusations sent shockwaves through the death metal community, where Suffocation has maintained a respected presence since their formation in 1988. Known for pioneering technical death metal with their brutal sound and complex compositions, the band has influenced countless acts within the extreme metal scene.

However, Suffocation quickly mounted a defense against Morotti’s allegations. In a Facebook statement released Monday, the band presented a different narrative regarding the drummer’s departure, claiming that scheduling conflicts—not interpersonal issues—led to their split.

“To address Eric Morotti’s false claims made in his social media posts on April 10 and to the news outlets who picked it up, Suffocation would like to take a moment to set the record straight,” the statement began. “Last week, the decision was made by Suffocation to part ways with Eric Morotti due to his conflicting schedule with Sanguisugabogg, which affected Suffocation’s schedule for the year.”

The band further revealed that Morotti was notified of his termination via email on April 8, two days before his public announcement. They expressed disappointment at his public response, stating: “It is unfortunate that Eric decided to falsify claims and take this to a negative place forcing us to make a statement.” Despite the contentious split, Suffocation concluded their statement by wishing Morotti “nothing but the best of luck on his future endeavors.”

The method of Morotti’s dismissal has generated additional discussion among fans. As one Facebook user commented: “If I was in a band for a decade and they fired me with an email, I’d be pissed, too.” This sentiment highlights the complex dynamics often at play in professional music groups, especially those with long-standing membership.

Suffocation has already moved forward by announcing John Longstreth of technical death metal band Origin as Morotti’s replacement. Longstreth brings considerable experience to the position, having established himself as one of death metal’s most technically proficient drummers.

Both bands involved in the controversy continue their touring schedules despite the public dispute. Suffocation has an upcoming show in Mckees Rock, Pennsylvania on May 12, while Sanguisugabogg will perform in Reading, Pennsylvania on April 18.

This public disagreement reflects the often-challenging nature of relationships within long-running bands, where creative differences, scheduling conflicts, and interpersonal tensions can create volatile situations. As both parties continue their separate musical journeys, fans of extreme metal will be watching to see how this personnel change affects the sound and trajectory of one of death metal’s most influential acts.
