California Congressman Resigns Amid Sexual Misconduct Investigation

Representative Eric Swalwell announced his resignation from Congress on Monday, just hours after the House Ethics Committee launched an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” Swalwell stated in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.”

The six-term Democratic congressman from California’s Bay Area also expressed concerns about efforts to force an immediate expulsion vote against him, claiming he was being denied due process in the matter.

The allegations first came to light when the San Francisco Chronicle reported that a former employee accused Swalwell of sexual assault on two occasions when she was too intoxicated to consent. The woman, who was 21 when hired and worked with Swalwell for nearly two years, also alleged he sent explicit photos via Snapchat while requesting nude photos in return.

According to reports, the former staff member claimed she had sexual relations with Swalwell while he was her supervisor. She stated that although her boyfriend at the time encouraged her to report the incidents to police, she declined, believing her account would not be taken seriously given Swalwell’s position of power.

CNN has since expanded on the story, reporting they spoke with three additional individuals who alleged various forms of sexual misconduct by the congressman. Swalwell has categorically denied these accusations.

The scandal has already derailed Swalwell’s political aspirations beyond Congress. Just one day before his resignation announcement, he suspended his campaign for California governor, which he had launched earlier this year with hopes of succeeding Governor Gavin Newsom in 2026.

“To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” Swalwell wrote when announcing his campaign suspension. “I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”

Swalwell, 43, has represented California’s 15th congressional district since 2013 and had become a national figure through his role on the House Intelligence Committee and as a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump. He briefly ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2019.

The congressman’s resignation marks the end of a political career that had been on an upward trajectory within Democratic circles. His departure creates a vacancy that will likely remain unfilled until the general election in November, leaving his Bay Area constituents without representation in the House for several months.

The House Ethics Committee investigation, which would typically examine potential violations of congressional rules, will likely be terminated following Swalwell’s resignation, as the committee only has jurisdiction over current members of Congress.

Political analysts suggest this scandal may have broader implications for House Democrats already facing a challenging election cycle as they attempt to reclaim the majority. The party will now need to quickly identify a strong candidate for Swalwell’s safely Democratic seat.

The allegations against Swalwell come amid heightened scrutiny of workplace misconduct in politics, with several members of Congress facing similar accusations in recent years. His case highlights ongoing concerns about power dynamics between elected officials and their staff, and the challenges faced by those who come forward with allegations against powerful figures.

Swalwell’s office has not yet announced when his resignation will take effect or his plans following his departure from Congress.
