Congressman Eric Swalwell Resigns Following Multiple Sexual Misconduct Allegations

The woman, who was 21 when hired at Swalwell’s district office in Castro Valley, California, claimed the congressman pursued her romantically, sent explicit images via Snapchat, and requested nude photographs in return. Her allegations included an accusation of rape.
Following the initial report, additional women came forward with similar claims. Ally Sammarco publicly alleged that Swalwell had offered professional assistance by “sharing her resume” with congressional offices before sending “very inappropriate” Snapchat messages. Several other women have made accusations while requesting anonymity, citing fears of professional retribution.
Swalwell has strongly denied the most serious allegations, particularly the rape accusation.
“These allegations are false and come on the eve of an election against the frontrunner for governor,” he stated, referencing his now-suspended gubernatorial campaign. “For nearly 20 years, I have served the public — as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women.”
The congressman did, however, acknowledge unspecified personal failings in his public statements. In an April video message, he directly addressed his wife of eight years, Brittany Watts: “I do not suggest to you in any way that I am perfect or that I’m a saint. I have certainly made mistakes in judgment in my past. Those mistakes are between me and my wife. And to her, I apologize deeply for putting her in this position.”
The scandal has deeply divided Swalwell’s staff, with several senior team members publicly breaking with their boss. In a joint statement, multiple staff leaders expressed solidarity with the accusers: “We’re horrified by the recent reporting… We stand with our former colleague, and the other women who have come forward. We believe you should stand with them, too. The behavior detailed in these reports is abhorrent, beneath the dignity of those serving in public office and betrays the trust of all Californians.”

First elected to Congress in 2012, he has represented various Northern California districts and briefly sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 before withdrawing due to low polling numbers. More recently, he had been considered a frontrunner in California’s upcoming gubernatorial race.
The congressman’s departure creates a vacancy in California’s 14th congressional district. In his resignation statement, Swalwell indicated he would work with his staff “to ensure that they are able, in my absence, to serve the needs of the good people of the 14th congressional district.”
