Former UN Group Member Choi Jung-won Cleared of Adultery Allegations in Court Ruling

Choi Jung-won, a former member of the musical group UN, has been legally exonerated from false adultery accusations following a recent appellate court decision, bringing closure to a case that began in late 2022.

On November 26, Choi made a public statement via social media addressing the allegations that had circulated online. “Regarding the various claims recently raised online, the facts have been clearly confirmed by the appellate court’s ruling,” he wrote, breaking his silence on the matter that had potentially damaged his reputation.

The case originated in December 2022 when an individual identified only as Mr. A, the husband of Choi’s acquaintance, filed a civil lawsuit seeking 100 million won (approximately $74,000) in damages. Mr. A had claimed his marriage deteriorated due to what he alleged was an inappropriate relationship between Choi and his wife.

In his social media post, Choi emphatically denied these allegations. “The false claims spread by Mr. A, such as calling me an ‘adulterer,’ are not true,” he stated. He further refuted accusations that he had demanded money and meetings, claiming these were fabrications that Mr. A had instructed his spouse to disseminate.

The appellate court’s ruling validated Choi’s position, finding Mr. A guilty on multiple counts including defamation, incitement to defamation, and intimidation. The court imposed a fine of 3 million won (approximately $2,200) on Mr. A, effectively establishing that the adultery accusations were unfounded.

To substantiate his claims, Choi partially released an audio recording of a conversation between Mr. A and his wife. In the recording, Mr. A can be heard discussing potential financial gain from the lawsuit, saying: “Lawyer Kim said that normally, if you sue someone like that guy (Choi Jung-won), it’s about 30 to 40 million won, but since he’s a washed-up celebrity, you could probably get as much as 100 million won.” This evidence suggests that financial motives may have played a role in the allegations against Choi.

“The court, after a lengthy review, did not accept the allegations of adultery, and it was confirmed through the ruling that I am not an adulterer,” Choi explained in his statement. He clarified that the gathering mentioned in previous allegations “was simply a meeting among acquaintances, and there was no inappropriate relationship.”

The case highlights the vulnerability of public figures to damaging accusations and the lengthy legal processes often required to clear their names. For Choi, who gained fame as a member of the group UN, the allegations potentially threatened both his personal reputation and professional standing in South Korea’s competitive entertainment industry.

False accusations against celebrities have become increasingly problematic in South Korea, where online speculation can rapidly damage reputations. The country’s legal system has been working to address these issues through defamation laws that protect individuals from false claims.

Choi concluded his statement with a warning that he would take legal action against any further dissemination of false information or distorted rumors. “Due to unfounded claims and reckless speculation, there have been many misunderstandings and secondary harm,” he noted, indicating his determination to prevent further damage to his reputation.

Several other complaints related to defamation and illegal acts reportedly remain ongoing, suggesting that the legal aftermath of this case continues to unfold despite the definitive court ruling on the adultery allegations.
