In a significant blow to public health credibility, former CDC scientific advisor Dr. Katelyn Jetelina has advised Americans to avoid the agency’s website due to increasing political interference in its scientific content. The warning comes after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reportedly forced the CDC to publish scientifically unfounded claims linking vaccines to autism on Wednesday, contradicting decades of research.

“This wasn’t a debate or a misunderstanding, and no new data was presented,” Jetelina wrote in her widely read newsletter “Your Local Epidemiologist.” “This was political actors overriding science in a place where accuracy, integrity, credibility, transparency, and honesty literally saves lives.”

Jetelina, an epidemiologist who previously served as a scientific communication advisor to two CDC directors during the COVID-19 pandemic, expressed grave concern about the deterioration of the agency’s scientific independence. She specifically recommended avoiding CDC content related to vaccines, reproductive health, environmental science, and health equity, while noting that data systems like flu and wastewater surveillance remain reliable as they’re largely controlled by states and career scientists.

The situation represents an unprecedented crisis for an institution long considered the gold standard in global public health. Founded in 1946, the CDC has historically been the frontline defense against disease outbreaks domestically and internationally, with its Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) – often called “disease detectives” – responding to health threats worldwide.

Health professionals are particularly concerned about the ripple effects of compromised trust. Jetelina recounted a conversation with colleagues responding to the current infant botulism outbreak who questioned: “How do you ask the public to trust that science on infant formula when another part of the agency is being forced to publish false information?”

The warning comes amid what Jetelina describes as a 10-month period where the CDC has been “pushed onto life support” through leadership purges, dismantled scientific programs, and an exodus of experts either fired or departing voluntarily. Public health experts warn this hollowing out of institutional knowledge could hamper America’s ability to respond to future health emergencies.

In response to this credibility crisis, Jetelina directed the public toward alternative trusted sources including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and healthychildren.org, along with vetted scientific communicators.

The implications extend beyond immediate public health concerns. The CDC’s global leadership role means diminished trust could affect international health initiatives and pandemic preparedness efforts worldwide. Many developing nations model their public health systems after the CDC and rely on its guidance during emergencies.

Health policy analysts note this represents a troubling acceleration of political interference in scientific institutions. Similar concerns have been raised about other federal agencies dealing with climate science, environmental protection, and food safety.

Despite the dire situation, Jetelina highlighted that many career CDC employees are working to flag misinformation and “hold the line” on scientific integrity. She also pointed to extraordinary mobilization outside the federal government by health systems, medical societies, researchers, and local health leaders creating alternative information channels.

“It’s hard to overstate what this moment represents,” Jetelina wrote. “Ideology is now overriding evidence—the critical information parents, families, and communities rely on to stay healthy—at the nation’s once vibrant and leading public health agency.”

The CDC has not yet issued an official response to these allegations of political interference or the call for Americans to avoid its website.
