Cambodia’s Interior Ministry has strongly refuted claims published by Thai news outlet Khaosod English regarding an alleged seizure of Cambodian weapons at the Thmor Da Casino by Thai Marines.

In an official statement reported by The Khmer Times, ministry officials declared the report entirely false, stating that the images and location depicted in the article do not match the Thmor Da Casino area. The ministry clarified that the actual location shown is “Gate 56 of Border Patrol Police,” which falls under the Border Protection Police Battalion 825 and the jurisdiction of Pursat Provincial Police—entirely within Cambodian sovereign territory.

The ministry characterized the publication of such inaccurate information as deliberately malicious and directly contradictory to recent diplomatic agreements between the two neighboring countries. Officials specifically pointed to Paragraph 8 of the Joint Statement from the Special General Border Committee (GBC) meeting held on December 27, 2025, where both nations committed to avoiding the dissemination of false information that could heighten tensions in the border region.

Furthermore, Cambodian officials took a strong position on the implications of the report, asserting that any claim of weapons seizure from a Cambodian police facility would constitute plunder and a clear violation of Cambodia’s sovereignty. The ministry emphasized that such actions by Thai authorities or military personnel would require accountability under international law.

The dispute highlights ongoing border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, which share a 817-kilometer border that has been subject to periodic disputes and occasional military confrontations over the years. Border issues between the two Southeast Asian neighbors have been particularly sensitive since the conflict over the Preah Vihear temple area in 2008-2011, which resulted in military exchanges and casualties on both sides.

The casino mentioned in the disputed report is located in a border area that has become increasingly significant as Cambodia has developed numerous gambling establishments along its borders with Thailand and Vietnam. These casinos primarily cater to visitors from neighboring countries where gambling is prohibited or heavily restricted, creating complex cross-border economic and security dynamics.

Border security concerns have intensified in recent years with reports of human trafficking, online scam operations, and other illicit activities in some border casino complexes. Both countries have pledged increased cooperation on these issues, making accurate reporting particularly important for maintaining stability.

Cambodia’s Interior Ministry concluded its statement by urging Thai officials to cease what it termed “aggressive actions” and to honor the principles outlined in the Joint Statement. The ministry called for resolution of any disputes through peaceful means based on mutual respect, goodwill, and trust.

This incident underscores the fragile nature of Cambodia-Thailand relations and the potential for media reports to influence diplomatic tensions. Despite recent efforts to improve bilateral ties through formal mechanisms like the GBC meetings, the swift and firm response from Cambodia demonstrates how sensitive border issues remain between the two ASEAN members.

Neither Thai authorities nor Khaosod English had issued a formal response to Cambodia’s allegations at the time of reporting. Regional observers note that clear communication and factual reporting will be essential as both countries work to maintain stability along their shared border.
