In a strong rebuttal, the Border Security Force (BSF) has categorically denied Bangladeshi media reports claiming that two suspects in the murder of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi crossed into India through the Haluaghat border.
BSF officials dismissed these allegations as “completely false, fabricated, and misleading,” stating there is no evidence to support such claims. The force, which is responsible for guarding the India-Bangladesh border, emphasized that no arrests or interceptions occurred in the Meghalaya sector.
“There has been no illegal cross-border movement,” asserted BSF Inspector General OP Upadhyay, who oversees operations in Meghalaya, in an interview with ANI on Monday. Upadhyay highlighted inconsistencies in the Bangladeshi media coverage, noting that just days earlier, a Bangladeshi Inspector General had stated no evidence existed of such border crossing.
The BSF official pointed to contradictory statements from different Bangladeshi officials, with a Deputy Inspector General later making claims that contradicted the earlier statement. When allegations surfaced that Meghalaya Police had apprehended the suspects, local authorities quickly denied any such action.
“The BGB [Bangladesh Border Guard] is a highly professional force,” Upadhyay said, questioning the plausibility of suspects traveling approximately 300 kilometers from Dhaka to the border without being detected, despite extensive surveillance networks and checkpoints throughout Bangladesh.
Several Bangladeshi news outlets had reported that Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh, both accused in Hadi’s murder, fled Bangladesh through the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh district and entered India’s Meghalaya state. These reports cited an Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, who allegedly claimed during a press briefing that the suspects had crossed with assistance from local accomplices.
The case has drawn significant attention in both countries due to the high-profile nature of the crime. Sharif Osman Hadi, 32, was critically wounded after being shot in the head during an election campaign event in Dhaka on December 12. Following the attack, he was airlifted to Singapore for specialized medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
The incident occurred during Bangladesh’s already tense election period, adding to concerns about political violence in the country. Bangladesh recently held national elections on January 7, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina securing her fourth consecutive term amid opposition boycotts and accusations of an unfair electoral process.
Border security between India and Bangladesh remains a sensitive issue, with both nations cooperating to prevent illegal crossings and criminal activities along their 4,096-kilometer shared border. The BSF maintains 1,305 border outposts along this frontier, while Bangladesh deploys border guards on their side.
Relations between the two neighbors have generally been positive in recent years, with cooperation on multiple fronts including trade, connectivity, and security. However, issues like illegal immigration, smuggling, and occasional border incidents continue to require diplomatic attention.
The BSF’s firm denial of these specific border crossing allegations comes at a time when both countries are working to ensure stability along their shared boundary. Officials from both nations regularly conduct coordinated patrols and hold border coordination conferences to address mutual concerns.
As of now, Bangladeshi authorities have not provided any evidence to substantiate their claims about the suspected killers’ movements across the international border.
