BLACKPINK’s Jisoo Addresses Family Controversy Through Legal Team

Attorneys representing BLACKPINK’s Jisoo have issued a forceful statement addressing allegations connecting the K-pop star to a recent controversy involving a family member. The legal response follows media reports that the brother of a prominent K-pop girl group member had been arrested on charges of sexually harassing an online streamer.

Kim & Chang law firm, representing Jisoo’s agency Blissoo, emphasized that the artist has no connection to the incident being discussed in media outlets and online platforms.

“Some media reports, online communities and social media platforms have been recklessly linking the artist and Blissoo to the family-related issue spreading online, while defaming them based on false claims,” said attorney Eun Hyun-ho, who is handling the case.

The statement clarified that Jisoo has lived independently since beginning her career at a young age and had no knowledge of her brother’s private affairs. This marks a rare instance where the globally recognized artist has had to address personal family matters through legal channels amid her successful career as both a musician and actress.

The controversy comes at a particularly sensitive time for Jisoo, who recently established her own agency, Blissoo, after BLACKPINK members chose not to renew their individual contracts with YG Entertainment. While the group continues to perform together under YG, each member has pursued independent management arrangements for their solo activities.

Claims circulating online that the individual in question had executive powers or financial connections to Blissoo were categorically denied by the legal team. “Online claims that the individual serves as an executive or chief executive officer of Blissoo are also false. The individual currently has no legal or management-related affiliation with the agency,” the attorney stated.

The legal representatives acknowledged that Jisoo had received “limited advice” from a family member during Blissoo’s establishment but emphasized that no relative had received compensation from the agency or participated in its decision-making processes.

Blissoo further denied allegations that either the company or Jisoo had provided financial or legal support to the individual at the center of the controversy. The firm warned that it would pursue strong legal action against those spreading misinformation.

“Repeatedly spreading false claims or using the artist’s name, likeness or image to link her to unrelated matters for circulation and consumption online constitutes a clear violation of her rights and defamation,” Eun stated, adding that the agency would “immediately take all possible civil and criminal legal action in response, and will respond firmly without leniency or settlement.”

The situation highlights the challenges faced by K-pop idols when personal or family matters intersect with their public personas. Industry analysts note that South Korean entertainment companies typically maintain strict control over artists’ images, with even distant family connections potentially affecting carefully cultivated public perceptions.

This incident occurs as Jisoo has been expanding her career beyond music. She recently appeared at a press event for Netflix’s “Boyfriend on Demand,” furthering her acting career following her successful lead role in the 2021 JTBC drama “Snowdrop.”

BLACKPINK, one of K-pop’s most internationally successful groups, has built a massive global following since their 2016 debut. The quartet holds numerous streaming and viewership records and has collaborated with Western artists including Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, and Cardi B.

As the legal situation unfolds, industry watchers note that how Jisoo and Blissoo manage this crisis could set precedent for how other K-pop artists navigate personal controversies in an industry where public image remains paramount to commercial success.
