A viral video claiming to show a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker faking an injury has been debunked as misleading by fact-checkers. The footage, which has gained significant traction on social media platforms, shows a woman with a head bandage speaking to reporters when bystanders suddenly remove the bandage, resulting in a confrontation.
Social media users sharing the video have made pointed political claims. One Instagram user alleged that “Mamata’s Bangladeshi daily wager was lying before the media with a fake injury. The public has exposed the truth.” On X (formerly Twitter), another user claimed: “A TMC member told a news reporter that BJP women had bitten her. After this, a local resident proved her wound to be fake in front of the camera. Ekta Kapoor should cast TMC workers in her serials.”
However, an investigation by the Digital Fact-checking and Research Analysis Collective (DFRAC) has determined that the video has no connection to West Bengal politics or the TMC. The footage actually shows an altercation between hospital staff and a patient’s relatives at Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.
The fact-check team initially noticed a watermark reading “Maurya Dhwaj Express” on the video. Following this lead, investigators found the original footage on the Maurya Dhwaj Express Facebook page, which had explicitly warned that the “Muzaffarpur video is being misleadingly circulated as an incident from Bengal, and false claims are being spread.”
Additional footage of the same incident was discovered on the same Facebook page, dated April 28, with a caption explaining that nursing staff at SKMCH had suspended emergency services following a disturbance created by a patient’s relative. The dispute had escalated into a physical confrontation between hospital staff and family members of a patient.
To verify their findings, DFRAC contacted a journalist from Maurya Dhwaj Express who confirmed that the video originated in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, not West Bengal. The journalist categorically denied any connection to TMC or BJP political workers.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of misinformation in India’s politically charged environment, particularly in regions with significant electoral competition like West Bengal. The state has witnessed intense rivalry between the ruling TMC, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the BJP, which has been working to expand its influence in the eastern state.
The spread of such misleading content is especially concerning during election periods, when political tensions are heightened. Fact-checking organizations like DFRAC play a crucial role in identifying and correcting misinformation before it can influence public opinion.
Social media platforms have become battlegrounds for political narratives, with videos and images often taken out of context to serve partisan interests. This case demonstrates how easily regional incidents can be repurposed and misrepresented to fit political narratives in entirely different states.
The misattribution of the hospital dispute as political theater shows the importance of critical media consumption and verification of sources, especially when content appears designed to reinforce existing political biases.
Based on the comprehensive fact-check, DFRAC has concluded that the viral video has no connection to TMC workers or West Bengal politics, making the widespread claims about it demonstrably false and misleading.
