Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has filed a NIS 2 million (approximately $540,000) defamation lawsuit against Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman, Religious Zionist Party MK Ohad Tal, and the right-wing broadcaster Channel 14. The lawsuit, filed in the Petah Tikva Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, centers on claims that Bennett took psychiatric medications to function during his time in office.
The legal action comes amid heightened political tensions in Israel, with Bennett accusing the defendants of fabricating damaging lies about his mental health to undermine his political standing ahead of upcoming elections.
In court documents, Bennett characterized Channel 14 as a “television propaganda channel masquerading as a journalistic news outlet.” He alleged the network primarily provides positive coverage of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his coalition while attacking political rivals through what he described as “fabrications presented as ‘facts,’ as well as extreme and biased opinions.”
Bennett’s lawsuit specifically targets Silman, who previously served as his coalition chairwoman before defecting to Netanyahu’s Likud party in 2022 – a move that played a critical role in bringing down Bennett’s government. According to the lawsuit, Silman told political activists at a conference that Bennett was “both confused and stuttering” from the beginning of his tenure and was in a “really, really poor mental state.”
The court filing quotes Silman as saying, “Everyone around him knew this; they would put pills for him into all kinds of little red boxes, supposedly so he could function.” She allegedly claimed that then-Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and his team were actually running the prime minister’s office during Bennett’s term.
The lawsuit states that Channel 14 broadcast these comments on May 4, 2026, and subsequently amplified them across its platforms, causing further damage to Bennett’s reputation.
“The defendant’s slanderous statements constitute blatant lies,” the lawsuit asserts. “The plaintiff never took medication for his mental functioning.” Bennett’s legal team characterized the allegations as “falsehoods fabricated by the defendant in order to justify her disgraceful defection from the plaintiff’s party, and to please the person who appointed her as a minister in exchange for her defection.”
The lawsuit further claims these statements were made to “save the fading political careers of both of them, which are nearing their end in the upcoming elections,” describing the accusations as “cheap and wild smears invented by a desperate political [figure] in order to mislead the public regarding the plaintiff’s mental state.”
MK Ohad Tal is accused of escalating Silman’s allegations on May 5, 2026, when he posted on X/Twitter referring to the alleged medications as “psychiatric” in nature. Tal’s now-deleted post stated: “Yesterday we discovered that Naftali Bennett takes psychiatric medications while completely hiding it from the public. Now it is clear how an Israeli citizen was willing to sell the country to the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas for the prime minister’s chair. Wishing you a full recovery, Naftali.”
Bennett’s legal team asserts that these statements have damaged his electoral prospects by casting doubt on his mental fitness to serve as prime minister again.
For her part, Silman continued the exchange on her X account, posting: “Naftali, maybe take a calming pill. I understand the polls are stressful…”
Channel 14 has responded to the lawsuit by claiming that “Bennett’s attempt to prevent the publication of a recording that is of public interest joins Yair Golan’s plan to silence media outlets that do not obey them.” The network added, “Instead of hiding behind lawyers, Naftali Bennett is expected to come to the studio and provide answers to the public.”
The case highlights the increasingly contentious nature of Israeli politics, where personal attacks and questions about mental fitness have become weapons in the political arsenal. It also underscores the complex relationship between media, politics, and personal reputation in Israel’s vibrant but often fractious democratic system.
