Ashes of Creation Founder Denies Allegations of Fund Misappropriation

“NefasQS has been fed false and defamatory information by individuals with an axe to grind,” Steven Sharif wrote in a statement responding to the latest wave of allegations against him. The founder of Intrepid Studios, the now-defunct team behind Kickstarter MMO Ashes of Creation, is pushing back strongly after accusations that millions of dollars from the project went unaccounted for.

The controversy centers around a YouTube video from content creator NefasQS, who claims to have obtained Intrepid Studios’ general ledger spanning from 2015 to 2026. According to the video, the documents reveal over $12 million in funds that are “not completely accounted for,” alongside questionable expenditures that raise concerns about how investor and backer money was handled.

This latest round of allegations follows earlier claims from investor Jason Caramanis that Sharif diverted millions from Intrepid while the studio struggled financially. The YouTuber compiled the ledger data into a publicly shared Google Sheets document, highlighting several potentially problematic expenses.

Among the flagged transactions are over $700 spent on Fortnite (categorized under research and development), tens of thousands of dollars at historical auctions, purchases on trading card websites, and payments to a private chef who reportedly never cooked for studio staff. “According to various former employees, there was a private chef hired for the company, but they never saw the chef at the workplace,” NefasQS claimed. “The chef only cooked for John and Steven at their home.”

The video also points to over $80,000 paid to Gore Oil Company, which was listed as the deed owner of a mansion purchased by Sharif and his husband John Moore in 2020, suggesting potential commingling of personal and company finances.

Sharif’s response, published on April 12, unequivocally denies all allegations. His statement calls the claims “categorically false” and accuses NefasQS of acting as a “mouthpiece” for parties already engaged in federal litigation against him, rather than independently verifying the information presented.

In his denial, Sharif makes three direct assertions: that there was “no misappropriation of Kickstarter funds whatsoever,” that the project was funded through multiple sources including his own “substantial personal capital,” and that claims about a “lavish lifestyle” funded by company money are “categorically false.”

The Intrepid founder further counters the narrative by suggesting the allegations are part of an improper takeover attempt. He claims the parties behind the accusations “orchestrated an unlawful foreclosure to take control of Intrepid’s assets” resulting in hundreds of developers losing their jobs without notice, pay, or benefits. Sharif indicated that additional evidence supporting his position would be filed in federal court.

Ashes of Creation holds the distinction of being the most successful Kickstarter MMO ever funded. The project’s cancellation two months ago came with virtually no warning, shocking a community that had followed its development for nearly a decade. Just two days before the entire team was laid off and development ceased, Sharif had publicly told backers the project remained “worthy of your investment.”

The abrupt shutdown created an information vacuum that has since been filled with accusations and counter-accusations. Caramanis was first to publicly raise concerns about financial mismanagement, with NefasQS subsequently becoming the primary channel for surfacing supporting documentation.

The dispute has spilled over into content moderation battles online. NefasQS reported that shortly after publishing the video, someone filed a privacy complaint against it, and their Reddit account was reported to administrators. Both actions are being disputed by the content creator, who has maintained the public availability of the ledger spreadsheet.

Financial experts note that interpreting corporate accounting documents without proper context presents significant challenges. Transactions that appear suspicious in isolation may have legitimate business justifications, while seemingly appropriate expenses could potentially disguise improper use of funds. The ultimate arbiter in this case will likely be the federal court system, where both parties will need to substantiate their claims with verifiable evidence.

For the thousands of backers who funded Ashes of Creation, the ongoing legal drama provides little solace. Their financial support resulted in neither the promised game nor transparency about the project’s failure. What remains is a federal lawsuit, disputed financial records, and lingering questions about the fate of millions in crowdfunding and investment capital.

Industry observers will be watching closely for Sharif’s promised federal court filing, which may provide more concrete evidence to evaluate the competing claims in this increasingly contentious dispute.
