Apple Agrees to $250 Million Settlement Over iPhone AI Feature Delay Claims
Apple has reached a $250 million settlement agreement to resolve a shareholder lawsuit alleging the tech giant failed to deliver promised artificial intelligence features for its iPhones on schedule, Reuters reported Tuesday.
The proposed settlement, which requires judicial approval before taking effect, does not include any admission of wrongdoing by Apple. The lawsuit, filed in California, claimed shareholders suffered damages when Apple released iPhone models in fall 2024 without the AI capabilities the company had previously announced and advertised earlier in the year.
According to the complaint, Apple had prominently marketed AI-enhanced features for its voice assistant Siri that weren’t available at the time of the devices’ launch. The comprehensive AI overhaul of Siri is now expected to be unveiled at Apple’s annual developer conference in June.
In a statement to Reuters, Apple defended its position while explaining its decision to settle: “Apple has reached a settlement to resolve claims related to the availability of two additional features. We resolved this matter to stay focused on doing what we do best, delivering the most innovative products and services to our users.” The company also noted it has already released several other AI features for its devices.
Clarkson Law Firm, one of the legal teams that brought the lawsuit, announced in a Tuesday press release that the proposed settlement would benefit class members who purchased any iPhone 16 model or select iPhone 15 models between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025. Customers who submit approved claims could receive between $25 and $95 per device, with the exact amount depending on claim volume and other factors.
“We are proud to secure a historic settlement on behalf of consumers who should feel confident and protected when deciding where to spend their hard-earned dollars,” said Ryan Clarkson, founder and managing partner of Clarkson Law Firm.
Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, another law firm involved in the case, emphasized the significance of the settlement amount. “This $250 million proposed settlement is one of the largest in a false advertising case,” noted Brian Danitz, a partner at the firm. “If approved by the court, the settlement will provide timely relief to consumers and companies nationwide for Apple’s alleged failure to deliver the AI-enhanced Siri features as advertised.”
The lawsuit highlights growing tensions between technology companies’ marketing promises and their ability to deliver complex AI features on announced timelines. As artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly important selling point for consumer electronics, companies face pressure to promote AI capabilities that may still be under development.
This settlement comes during a period of intense competition in the smartphone market, with manufacturers racing to integrate advanced AI features into their devices. Companies like Google and Samsung have already launched phones with significant on-device AI capabilities, increasing pressure on Apple to accelerate its own AI integration efforts.
For Apple, which has traditionally been more cautious about implementing new technologies until they meet the company’s quality standards, the settlement represents a significant financial consequence of the alleged gap between marketing and product delivery.
The case also underscores the legal risks technology companies face when promoting features still in development, particularly when those features are central to marketing campaigns for high-value consumer products like smartphones.

This settlement is a good reminder that even tech giants can face consequences for over-promising on new features. Consumers are increasingly savvy about AI capabilities and won’t tolerate delays or disappointments.
$250 million is a hefty settlement, but it’s probably better for Apple to resolve this quickly and move forward. Consumers expect AI capabilities to keep advancing, so they’ll need to deliver on their promises.
That’s a fair point. Settling avoids the distraction and potential reputational damage of a prolonged legal battle. Apple will want to refocus on innovating in the AI space.
Curious to see if this will impact Apple’s AI development timeline going forward. They may need to be more cautious about setting consumer expectations for new features. Transparency will be key.
Agreed, Apple will likely be more careful about marketing unfinished AI capabilities in the future. Consumers deserve reliable performance from the tech they rely on.
