Online conspiracy theories have proliferated in the aftermath of what authorities are calling an attempted assassination of President Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday, according to an analysis by The Washington Post.

The incident occurred when Cole Allen, a 31-year-old California man, allegedly charged a Secret Service checkpoint outside the Washington Hilton Hotel where the prestigious dinner was being held. The conspiracy narrative gained significant traction on social media platforms. Hollywood director and producer Morgan J. Freeman (not to be confused with the actor) published a post on X that simply repeated the word “STAGED” 132 times. This post alone garnered 58,000 likes, was shared 9,400 times, and reached 1.3 million viewers.

The underlying sentiment among conspiracy theorists appears to be that such an attack would politically benefit the 47th president. Trump’s camp has responded forcefully to these allegations, with spokesman Davis Ingle telling Fox News Digital, “Anyone who thinks President Trump staged his own assassination attempts is a complete moron.”

According to investigators, Allen had a history of political activism associated with Democratic causes. Records indicate he once donated $25 to Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential campaign and had participated in at least one “No Kings” protest.

Law enforcement officials revealed that Allen sent communications to a family member prior to the alleged attack, seemingly acknowledging that his planned actions could result in severe harm or death to himself. These messages reportedly framed his motivations as political and portrayed himself as a defender of oppressed people, though he also expressed concern about potential collateral damage.
