In a troubling development following recent protests at the Whitegate oil refinery in East Cork, AI-doctored images have been widely circulated online falsely depicting gardaí using violence against protesters. The manipulated content has spread rapidly, reaching international audiences through far-right figures, and has resulted in targeted harassment of individual officers.

The digital disinformation campaign specifically identified several gardaí who were policing the fuel protests earlier this month. Among them was Garda Chris Daly, who was deployed from Cork City with the public order unit. Images of Daly were shared online with calls to identify him and “run him out of the community,” despite evidence that the blockade had been policed without violence.

“People’s names shared and families threatened online, that’s just unfair, that’s passing the line,” Daly said. While his personal details weren’t ultimately exposed by Cork residents, he expressed concern for his family’s safety. He noted that at least five officers working at Whitegate had their images circulated online, with some having their home addresses revealed.

The situation has become serious enough that the Garda Representative Association (GRA) addressed it during their annual conference this week. Garda Peter Firth from Waterford proposed an emergency motion calling for immediate implementation of comprehensive policies to protect officers subjected to online harassment, doxxing, threats, or related abuse.

Firth detailed a particularly concerning case involving a Waterford-based officer whose address was published online after his presence at the Whitegate protest. According to Firth, the officer had produced pepper spray as a warning to protesters but never deployed it. Despite this, AI was used to manipulate images of the officer, and false rumors spread claiming he had sprayed a 14-year-old boy.

“They said he pepper sprayed a 14-year-old. The national media put a microphone in someone’s face and that became a parroted line,” Firth explained. “He was named online. His full home address was given. And his parents were subject to online abuse and comment by people.”

The disinformation campaign reached international audiences when controversial far-right figure Tommy Robinson shared the content with his followers. The irony of these posts being accompanied by Irish tricolors was not lost on Firth, who emphasized that gardaí are simply carrying out their duties within legal boundaries.

“They are then attacked when they’re off duty, at home. Their property threatened, their lives threatened, their family threatened,” he said.

This incident highlights the growing intersection of digital manipulation technology, social media, and public protests. Law enforcement officials around the world are increasingly facing similar tactics, where genuine images from protests are altered to create false narratives that inflame tensions and put officers at risk.

Responding to these concerns, Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly announced this week that senior investigating officers would be appointed in every Garda district to examine allegations of threats made against gardaí during the recent protests.

While the GRA welcomed Kelly’s announcement as a step in the right direction, Firth emphasized that a formal policy addressing threats against gardaí is urgently needed to protect officers and their families.

The Whitegate protest itself was largely characterized by good relationships between gardaí and the main protest groups, making the subsequent digital harassment campaign particularly misleading. Both sides had maintained calm and respectful interactions throughout the East Cork demonstration, contrary to what the manipulated images portrayed.

This incident underscores the evolving challenges law enforcement faces in an era of sophisticated digital manipulation tools and rapid information sharing, where officers’ actions on duty can lead to personal targeting in their private lives.
