Actor Denies False Statements in Rebel Wilson Defamation Battle
The star of Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut emphatically denied making false claims about a bathing incident with a producer that has escalated into a high-profile defamation case in federal court.
Charlotte MacInnes, who believed she had secured her breakthrough role when cast in the musical comedy “The Deb,” testified Thursday that she never complained to Wilson about feeling uncomfortable after sharing a bath with co-producer Amanda Ghost.
“I never made a complaint to Ms Wilson,” MacInnes told the court, directly contradicting allegations made in Wilson’s social media posts that are now at the center of the legal dispute.
The young actor has sued the “Pitch Perfect” star over social media statements suggesting MacInnes had dishonestly retracted a complaint about Ghost in exchange for career opportunities, including a lead role in a stage production and a record deal.
The incident in question occurred on September 5, 2023, when Ghost suffered a medical episode at Bondi Beach. MacInnes assisted the producer back to an apartment they shared with others. According to MacInnes’ statement, she ran a shower for Ghost before she and another woman suggested a bath would be more effective in warming her up.
“An innocent incident occurred that Ms Wilson has exploited and mischaracterized ever since,” MacInnes stated.
Wilson’s barrister, Dauid Sibtain SC, challenged MacInnes during cross-examination, noting that her initial statement omitted the fact that she had shared the bath with Ghost—a detail she has since acknowledged. Sibtain suggested her statement was “false or at least highly misleading” due to this omission, a characterization MacInnes firmly rejected.
The actor maintains she never told Wilson that Ghost had asked her to shower and bathe together or that the situation had made her uncomfortable, directly contradicting the claims in Wilson’s posts. “I never said those words,” MacInnes testified.
The relationship between the parties showed signs of strain even before the bathing incident. Evidence presented to the court revealed tension dating back to May 2023, four months prior to the alleged bath incident. Text messages disclosed during proceedings showed MacInnes had chosen to dine with Ghost over attending a theatre production with Wilson and other cast members from “The Deb.”
MacInnes failed to respond to Wilson’s invitation, leading to a reproachful message from the director the following day. “In the future, it is terribly rude to say you wanted a ticket to a show and then you don’t reply or follow up… not a great start to our working relationship,” Wilson wrote.
The young actor responded with “huge apologies” and described Wilson as “nothing short of wonderful,” but these early tensions foreshadowed the complete breakdown in their professional relationship that would occur later.
MacInnes testified that she had been deeply distressed when Ghost stopped speaking to her after Wilson relayed the alleged complaint, expressing concern about the potential impact on her career. She acknowledged that Ghost had provided significant professional support, including feedback and networking opportunities, and described feeling as though her dreams were coming true when performing on super yachts and flying on private jets, partly thanks to Ghost’s influence.
“The Deb,” set in rural New South Wales and directed and co-produced by Wilson, was released in Australia earlier in April. The film’s widespread distribution had been delayed following its 2024 film festival premiere due to the ongoing legal issues.
The case highlights the increasingly complex intersection of social media, professional relationships in the entertainment industry, and the legal ramifications of public statements by high-profile figures. It also underscores the power dynamics between established industry players like Wilson and Ghost and emerging talents such as MacInnes.
The trial continues, with the outcome likely to have significant implications for all parties involved and potentially set precedents for similar disputes in the entertainment industry.
