Amid the ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel, social media platforms have become flooded with misinformation about the 2026 war, with numerous instances of artificial intelligence-generated content and misattributed footage being presented as authentic war documentation.

Fact-checkers at AAP FactCheck have identified multiple examples of false claims circulating online, including manipulated imagery and outdated videos being repurposed to fit current narratives.

In one prominent case, Australian-based commentator Maram Susli, who operates online under the aliases “Syrian Girl” or “Partisan Girl,” shared a video allegedly showing “CIA headquarters in Dubai targeted this morning by Iran.” Investigation revealed the footage actually depicted a residential building fire in Sharjah, UAE, from October 2015—an incident that was widely covered by international media outlets including Fox News, BBC News, and local publications like Gulf News and Khaleej Times.

The same social media account posted additional content claiming to show damage to three Dubai landmarks: the Burj Khalifa tower, the Burj Al Arab hotel, and the Palm Jumeirah island district. While Iranian attacks on February 28 did damage the Palm Jumeirah district and Burj Al Arab hotel, no credible evidence indicates the Burj Khalifa sustained damage. A reverse image search confirmed the supposed Burj Khalifa “fire” image was actually a decade-old photograph showing the 828-meter structure surrounded by fog, as documented in a 2015 Daily Telegraph article.

Particularly troubling are the fabricated images of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei allegedly lying under rubble following the US-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran. Although Iranian state media reported on February 28 that Khamenei was killed in his office during these operations, the circulating images were identified as AI-generated by Google’s SynthID detection tool, which detected digital watermarks confirming their artificial origin.

In another instance of misinformation, a video supposedly showing “millions at the funeral of the Iranian leader” actually depicted the February 2025 funeral procession for Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. The footage, which matches SBS reporting of the event, clearly shows Lebanon and Hezbollah flags draped over coffins and displayed on vehicles—details inconsistent with an Iranian state funeral.

False satellite imagery has also proliferated, with users sharing “before and after” images claiming to show destruction at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. Fact-checkers determined these images were fabricated—the “before” image was actually of the US Fifth Fleet Naval Base in Manama, Bahrain, taken from Google Maps, while the “after” shot appears to be an AI-generated version manipulated to show non-existent damage. Google’s SynthID tool confirmed that “all or part” of the image was created with Google AI.

This claim about Al Udeid Air Base has been independently debunked by fact-checking organizations Misbar and BBC Verify. While Al-Jazeera did report that two ballistic missiles struck Al Udeid Air Base on March 1, 2026, and Reuters published authentic satellite imagery showing damage to the US Fifth Fleet Naval base, the viral images do not accurately represent either site.

The New York Times has also published verified before-and-after satellite imagery of the naval base showing actual damage patterns that differ significantly from those depicted in the manipulated social media posts.

As the conflict continues, the proliferation of AI-generated and misattributed content highlights the growing challenge of information verification during modern warfare, where digital misinformation can spread globally within minutes, potentially influencing public perception and policy responses.
