Former First Lady Jill Biden Breaking Silence on Husband’s Exit from 2024 Race in New Memoir

Jill Biden is finally addressing her husband Joe Biden’s controversial decision to end his 2024 presidential reelection campaign, a moment that reshaped American politics last year. After nearly five decades as a political spouse, she has chosen to reveal her perspective in her forthcoming memoir, “View from the East Wing,” scheduled for release on June 2 through Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.

“It was kind of cathartic for me to write it,” Biden told The Associated Press in a brief telephone interview. “I wrote about all the sometimes painful—but other times, most of it really beautiful moments that Joe and I shared during his presidency.”

The former first lady’s memoir promises to “set the record straight” about a tumultuous period in American politics. Her husband’s abrupt withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race came after mounting pressure from fellow Democrats concerned about his age, health, and ability to defeat Republican Donald Trump in a rematch of their 2020 contest.

Joe Biden, who was 80 when he announced his reelection bid in April 2023, faced intensifying scrutiny about his fitness for office, particularly after his disastrous June 2024 debate performance against Trump. During that widely watched encounter, the then-president struggled with a raspy voice to articulate his positions and frequently appeared to lose his train of thought. While his team attributed the poor showing to a cold, the damage was done.

Despite initially insisting he would remain in the race, Biden eventually bowed to pressure and withdrew his candidacy, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. Harris ultimately lost to Trump in the November election, ending the Biden-Harris administration after a single term.

“I have put things in perspective,” Jill Biden said of her memoir, promising readers a “more balanced view” of her husband’s presidency. The book will also highlight her personal journey as a working professional who maintained multiple roles throughout her time in the White House.

At 74, Jill Biden made history as the first presidential spouse to continue her career while serving as first lady, teaching English and writing twice weekly at a Northern Virginia community college throughout her husband’s administration.

The memoir will also touch on Joe Biden’s recent health challenges. In May 2025, the former president was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.

“The fact that it is in his bones means that he will have cancer, you know, all his lifetime,” she explained, adding that doctors believe he will “live out his natural life.” With a touch of humor, she added, “Like most retired couples, he’ll probably drive me crazy till the end of it.” Despite his diagnosis, the former president remains active, visiting Washington at least weekly for meetings and speaking engagements.

Beyond personal revelations, the book will chronicle Jill Biden’s unique tenure during a transformative period in American history. She served as first lady during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the aftermath of the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection, when Trump supporters violently attempted to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory.

While her husband focused on governance from the White House during the pandemic, Jill Biden traveled the country encouraging Americans to get vaccinated. Throughout her time as first lady, she advocated for military families, education, community colleges, cancer prevention, and women’s health initiatives.

This isn’t her first foray into publishing. Jill Biden previously authored “Where the Light Enters” (2019), which detailed meeting and building a life with Joe Biden, then a U.S. senator from Delaware. She has also published three children’s books.

Before becoming first lady, she served as second lady from 2009 to 2017 during the Obama administration. Currently, she chairs the Milken Institute’s Women’s Health Network, continuing her public service beyond her White House years.

The memoir is likely to provide rare insight into one of the most consequential political decisions in recent American history and offer a behind-the-scenes look at a presidency defined by historic challenges and dramatic conclusion.
