Australian authorities are investigating a deadly attack at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach that left 15 people dead, including a 10-year-old girl, a rabbi, and a Holocaust survivor. Officials have labeled the shooting as an act of antisemitic terrorism.

The suspects in the attack were a father and son, a revelation that has shocked the nation. The 50-year-old father, who was killed during the incident, arrived in Australia in 1998 on a student visa and had obtained permanent residency. His 24-year-old Australian-born son was wounded in the attack and is currently receiving hospital treatment.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that Australia’s domestic intelligence agency, the Australian Security Intelligence Agency, had investigated the son for six months in 2019, reportedly examining his ties to a Sydney-based Islamic State group cell. However, authorities were more interested in his associates rather than the son himself.

The attack targeted a large gathering celebrating the first day of Hanukkah, where hundreds of Jewish community members had assembled. Dozens of others were injured, some seriously. Police reported that the father held a firearms license and was a member of a gun club, suggesting he was a target shooter.

Amid the tragedy, a heroic act has emerged. Ahmed al Ahmed, a 42-year-old fruit shop owner and father of two, attempted to tackle and disarm one of the gunmen. Footage broadcast on Australian television shows him pointing the assailant’s weapon at him before placing it on the ground. Al Ahmed was shot in the shoulder by the second gunman but survived. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has publicly acknowledged his bravery.

The attack occurs against a backdrop of escalating antisemitic incidents in Australia. The country, with a population of 28 million people including approximately 117,000 Jews, has witnessed a threefold increase in antisemitic incidents since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. These incidents include assaults, vandalism, threats, and intimidation, according to Jillian Segal, the government’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism.

Over the past year, synagogues and cars have been torched, businesses and homes vandalized with antisemitic graffiti, and Jews attacked, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne, where 85% of the nation’s Jewish population resides. In August, Prime Minister Albanese blamed Iran for two antisemitic attacks and subsequently severed diplomatic ties with Tehran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed he had warned Australian leaders months ago about the dangers of failing to take action against antisemitism. He suggested that Australia’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state, a position aligned with numerous other countries, “pours fuel on the antisemitic fire.”

The Bondi Beach shooting marks the deadliest mass shooting in Australia in three decades. The country implemented strict gun control laws following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, where a lone gunman killed 35 people. Since then, mass shootings have become extremely rare in Australia.

The few significant incidents this century include two murder-suicides with death tolls of five people in 2014 and seven in 2018, both cases where gunmen killed their families before taking their own lives. In 2022, six people died in a shootout between police and Christian extremists at a rural property in Queensland state.

In response to this latest tragedy, Prime Minister Albanese has announced his intention to push for even tougher gun legislation, reinforcing Australia’s commitment to preventing gun violence and addressing the rising tide of antisemitism in the country.
