Iranian Drone Strike Kills Six US Soldiers at Vulnerable Kuwait Port Facility

An Iranian drone strike that killed six American soldiers on Sunday targeted an operations center located in a civilian port in Kuwait, far removed from the main military installation, according to satellite imagery and U.S. officials.

The attack hit a facility at Port Shuaiba, an active commercial seaport and industrial zone just south of Kuwait City. Satellite images taken after the strike show the main building in the complex destroyed, with black smoke billowing from the site. The operations center was situated more than 10 miles from Camp Arifjan, the primary U.S. Army base in the area, and merely a mile from shipping piers where cargo vessels routinely dock.

Joey Amor, whose wife Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor was among those killed, told The Associated Press that military personnel had been moved to what he described as a “shipping container-style building” approximately one week before the attack. According to Amor, the facility lacked defensive capabilities.

“They were dispersing because they were in fear that the base they were on was going to get attacked, and they felt it was safer in smaller groups in separated places,” he explained. The 39-year-old soldier from White Bear Lake, Minnesota, was part of a supply and logistics unit based in Iowa.

The strike comes amid heightened regional tensions following a coordinated Israeli-American attack on Iran, which has responded with retaliatory strikes against several countries in the region, including Kuwait. President Donald Trump and top defense officials have warned that additional American casualties are likely as the conflict continues to unfold.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated Monday that the six soldiers were killed when a projectile penetrated air defenses and struck their “tactical operations center.” The Pentagon subsequently confirmed it was a drone strike at Port Shuaiba when announcing the identities of four of the fallen soldiers.

The location of the operations center raises significant questions about the security measures in place for U.S. military personnel stationed in the region. The facility was situated in an industrial area surrounded by oil storage tanks, refineries, and a power plant—potentially amplifying the impact of any attack.

Following media reports about the vulnerable nature of the operations center, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell took to social media to defend the military’s security protocols, stating that the “secure facility was fortified with 6-foot walls.” He added that the military maintains “the most extensive Air Defense umbrella in the world over the Middle East right now and control of the skies is increasing with every wave of airpower.”

However, Parnell’s office did not respond to follow-up questions about what protective role the walls would have played against a drone attack or what specific air defense systems were positioned within range of the command center at the port.

When contacted about the incident, Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, declined to provide additional details, noting that “it would be inappropriate to comment given the incident is under investigation.”

The attack highlights the evolving nature of warfare in the Middle East, where relatively inexpensive drones have become increasingly effective weapons against even well-equipped military forces. It also underscores the challenges facing U.S. forces operating in civilian areas where traditional military defenses may be more difficult to implement effectively.

As tensions continue to escalate across the region, military planners face difficult questions about how to better protect American personnel from similar attacks in the future, particularly those positioned in facilities outside the perimeter of main military installations.
