Chile Shifts Sharply Right as José Antonio Kast Wins Presidency on Security Platform

Chile delivered its sharpest political shift in decades as José Antonio Kast, a hard-right former lawmaker, won the presidency in a decisive victory on Sunday. Kast captured 58% of the vote, defeating left-wing candidate Jeannette Jara, a former labor minister, in an election that centered primarily on security concerns and immigration policy.

The 59-year-old father of nine, born to German immigrants in Santiago, enters office with a platform focused almost entirely on restoring public order and tightening Chile’s borders. After previous unsuccessful presidential bids in 2017 and 2021, Kast’s breakthrough in this election comes as rising crime rates have unsettled a population long accustomed to relative stability.

“Here, no individual won, no party won — Chile won, and hope won,” Kast declared in his victory speech. “The hope of living without fear. That fear that torments families.”

Kast’s campaign resonated with voters concerned about Chile’s deteriorating security situation. Once considered one of Latin America’s safest countries, Chile has experienced a sharp rise in violent crime over the past several years, with homicide rates climbing to their highest levels in decades. Security experts point to the growing presence of transnational criminal organizations, including Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, which have expanded extortion, kidnapping, and narcotics operations within the country.

In response to these concerns, Kast has pledged what he describes as the most aggressive public-order campaign in a generation. His platform includes mass deportations of undocumented migrants, expanded policing powers, and military deployment to combat drug trafficking and organized crime.

“When we tell an irregular migrant that they are breaking the law and must leave our country if they ever want the chance to return, we mean it,” Kast emphasized. “We must show great firmness against crime, organized crime, impunity and disorder.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was quick to congratulate the president-elect, stating, “Under his leadership, we are confident Chile will advance shared priorities to include strengthening public security, ending illegal immigration and revitalizing our commercial relationship.”

Kast’s victory reflects a broader regional trend in which voters are increasingly turning to candidates who promise crime control rather than ideological transformation. His messaging echoed themes similar to those of U.S. President Donald Trump, particularly regarding immigration enforcement and border security. In fact, following Trump’s victory in 2024, Kast predicted his own success, saying on Chilean radio, “We are going to win, too.”

While Kast has long held staunchly conservative positions on social issues like abortion, gender policy, and same-sex marriage, he strategically downplayed these aspects during the campaign to broaden his appeal. Instead, he emphasized structural changes he deems necessary to address the security crisis, including streamlining the bureaucracy, tightening Chile’s asylum system, and expanding presidential authority to combat organized crime.

On economic policy, Kast intends to steer Chile toward a more market-oriented model, with tax cuts, deregulation, and expanded mining development—particularly in lithium and copper, two of the country’s most important exports. He has signaled interest in strengthening ties with the United States and other Western partners, even as China remains Chile’s largest trading partner and a major buyer of its mineral resources.

Chile’s rightward shift follows a similar political change in neighboring Argentina, which elected libertarian Javier Milei on a platform of radical economic reform. However, analysts note that the two leaders represent distinct strains of right-wing politics: Milei is an anti-establishment libertarian focused on economic transformation, while Kast is a more traditional conservative emphasizing order, border enforcement, and institutional authority.

Kast is also one of South America’s most vocal critics of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, frequently citing Venezuela’s economic collapse and mass migration as cautionary examples for Chile. He has explicitly linked Venezuela’s crisis to Chile’s migration and security challenges.

Though his party lacks a congressional majority—which could potentially slow or dilute parts of his agenda—Kast’s decisive margin suggests Chilean voters are willing to embrace his security-focused approach after years of political gridlock and rising public anxiety about crime.
