Senate Republicans warn DOJ probe against Powell must be legitimate, not politically motivated
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has cautioned that allegations against Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell must be substantive and free from political influence, as bipartisan concern over a Department of Justice criminal investigation continues to mount on Capitol Hill.
“I haven’t seen the case or whatever the allegations or charges are,” Thune told reporters. “But I would say they better be — they better be real and they better be serious.”
The South Dakota Republican’s comments come amid growing anger from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle regarding the DOJ’s investigation. Several Republican senators have threatened to block any future Federal Reserve nominees from President Donald Trump until the matter is resolved.
Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina was among the first to take a firm stance, vowing to “oppose the confirmation of any nominee for the Fed — including the upcoming Fed Chair vacancy” shortly after news of the investigation broke. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joined this position after speaking with Powell, claiming “it’s clear the administration’s investigation is nothing more than an attempt at coercion.” Murkowski has suggested Congress may launch its own investigation into the DOJ’s actions.
When asked about his colleague’s position, Thune acknowledged that senators would “react to this differently” but emphasized that without knowing the full scope of the investigation, it was difficult to draw conclusions. “I think it’s really important that it can resolve quickly and that there not be any appearance of political interference with the Fed or its activities,” he added.
Powell has directly addressed the controversy, asserting that the investigation is not related to testimony he provided to the Senate Banking Committee last year regarding a $2.5 billion renovation of the Federal Reserve’s Washington headquarters. Instead, he characterized it as retaliation for the Federal Reserve “setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the president.”
The timing of the investigation is particularly significant as Powell’s term as Fed Chair expires in May. Thune expressed concern that Tillis’ threatened hold on Fed nominees could create complications for the central bank’s leadership transition, emphasizing the importance of ensuring continuity at the institution.
“They’ve got a couple of key missions when it comes to the economy, particularly dealing with inflation, which obviously is impacted by interest rate policy,” Thune noted. “And so I want to see them operate in an independent way, free of politics.”
The controversy has drawn sharp criticism from Democratic leaders as well. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York condemned the investigation, calling the allegations behind it “clearly bogus” and describing it as “a brazen attempt by Donald Trump to cannibalize the Fed’s independence.”
The Federal Reserve’s independence has long been considered crucial to its ability to implement monetary policy based on economic conditions rather than political considerations. The central bank’s decisions on interest rates have far-reaching impacts on inflation, employment, and overall economic stability.
As the investigation unfolds, market observers are closely watching for any signs that the Fed’s decision-making autonomy could be compromised. Financial markets typically react negatively to perceived political interference in central bank operations, as such interference could undermine the credibility of monetary policy decisions.
The outcome of this controversy could have significant implications for the future relationship between the White House, Congress, and the Federal Reserve, potentially reshaping the boundaries of central bank independence in the United States.

The Fed chair’s independence is crucial. I’m concerned this investigation could undermine that. The DOJ will need to provide a very strong justification to convince Congress this isn’t politically motivated.
Well said. Maintaining the credibility of the Fed is critical, so the DOJ will need to tread carefully here.
Interesting development. The DOJ probe into Powell must be justified and free from political bias. Senators on both sides seem concerned that it could undermine the Fed’s independence. I hope the investigation is thorough and transparent.
I agree, the integrity of the Fed is critical. Any investigation needs to be done properly, not for political gain.
Senators from both parties seem rightly concerned about potential political interference in this DOJ investigation. The integrity of the Fed chair role is paramount, so the DOJ will need to be extremely transparent.
Well said. The DOJ will have a high bar to clear to demonstrate the legitimacy of this investigation and avoid further partisan divisions.
This is a delicate situation that could have significant implications. I hope cooler heads prevail and the DOJ can demonstrate the merits of their investigation without damaging the Fed’s reputation.
Agreed. The Fed’s independence must be protected. Any probe needs to be thoroughly justified to avoid political fallout.
This is an important issue for the stability of the US economy and financial markets. I hope the DOJ can clearly demonstrate the legitimacy of their investigation to allay concerns from both parties in Congress.
Absolutely. The Fed chair needs to be able to operate without undue political interference. Transparency from the DOJ will be key here.
