A man who was convicted of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump on a Florida golf course last year has decided to accept legal representation for his sentencing phase, after representing himself during most of the trial.

Ryan Routh’s sentencing hearing in Fort Pierce, Florida, originally scheduled for this week, has been postponed to early February following his request for an attorney to represent him during both sentencing and appeals proceedings.

The 59-year-old defendant made headlines in September when his federal courtroom erupted into chaos moments after jurors found him guilty on all counts, including attempting to kill a presidential candidate and multiple firearm charges. Immediately after the verdict, Routh attempted to harm himself by stabbing himself in the neck with a flexible pen – a type specifically designed to prevent people in custody from using it as a weapon. Security officers quickly intervened and removed him from the courtroom.

According to prosecutors, Routh meticulously planned his assassination attempt for weeks before positioning himself with a rifle in shrubbery at Trump’s West Palm Beach country club on September 15, 2024. Trump, who at the time was the Republican presidential candidate, was playing golf when the incident occurred.

A Secret Service agent testified during the trial that he spotted Routh before Trump came into view. When Routh aimed his rifle at the agent, the Secret Service member opened fire, causing Routh to drop his weapon and flee without firing a shot. This quick response potentially prevented what could have been a devastating attack on the former president.

In his unusual motion requesting legal counsel, Routh made several bizarre statements, including an offer to trade his life in a prisoner swap with inmates allegedly unjustly held in other countries. He also extended an offer for Trump to “take out his frustrations on my face,” and wrote, “Just a quarter of an inch further back and we all would not have to deal with all of this mess forwards, but I always fail at everything (par for the course).”

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who was nominated by Trump in 2020, granted Routh’s request for legal representation despite criticizing what she called the “disrespectful charade” of his motion. In her decision, the judge stated that Routh’s filing made a mockery of the proceedings but noted she preferred to err on the side of ensuring proper legal representation.

The case has raised questions about the security protocols surrounding presidential candidates and the right of defendants to represent themselves in high-profile cases. Judge Cannon had previously approved Routh’s request to represent himself following two hearings in July, consistent with Supreme Court precedent that recognizes criminal defendants’ right to self-representation if they can demonstrate competence to waive their right to an attorney.

Throughout the original trial, Routh’s former defense attorneys remained present as standby counsel, a common practice when defendants choose to represent themselves.

The attempted assassination highlights ongoing concerns about political violence in the United States, particularly against high-profile politicians and candidates. The incident occurred during a period of heightened political tension leading up to the 2024 presidential election, making it one of several security incidents that have raised alarms about the safety of political figures in recent years.

Routh now faces significant prison time for his conviction on attempting to kill a presidential candidate and related weapons charges. The rescheduled February sentencing hearing will determine his punishment under federal guidelines.
