South Korean authorities have launched an investigation into popular political YouTuber Kim Ou-joon over allegations he spread false information about Prime Minister Han Duck-soo’s cabinet appointments.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office announced Thursday that it has begun examining claims that Kim, founder of the progressive online media outlet “Ddanzi Ilbo” and host of the “News Factory” podcast, deliberately circulated misinformation regarding the Prime Minister’s personnel selections.

The investigation stems from statements Kim made during a podcast episode in April 2022, shortly after President Yoon Suk Yeol’s election victory. During the broadcast, Kim alleged that Prime Minister Han had demanded control over cabinet appointments as a condition for accepting his nomination. According to prosecutors, Kim claimed Han had insisted on having authority to select ministers and vice ministers, presenting this as factual information to his audience.

Authorities contend these assertions were fabricated and have opened a formal probe under South Korea’s laws prohibiting the deliberate dissemination of false information. The case highlights growing tensions between the government and progressive media outlets since President Yoon’s administration took office.

Kim Ou-joon has built a significant following over the past decade as one of South Korea’s most influential political commentators. His podcast and YouTube channel attract millions of viewers monthly, particularly among younger, liberal-leaning audiences. His rise represents the growing influence of alternative media platforms in South Korea’s political landscape, where traditional news outlets have historically dominated.

The investigation comes amid increasing scrutiny of online content creators and their impact on public discourse in South Korea. The country’s vibrant social media ecosystem has transformed how citizens consume political information, with YouTube emerging as a critical platform for political commentary across the ideological spectrum.

Legal experts note that the case touches on delicate questions regarding free speech protections and the responsibilities of influential media figures. South Korea’s laws on false information have faced criticism from civil liberties groups who argue they can potentially be used to silence political opponents.

“This investigation reflects the ongoing tension between combating misinformation and protecting free expression,” said Professor Park Min-ho, a media law specialist at Seoul National University. “The courts will need to determine whether Kim’s statements constitute protected political speech or cross the line into deliberate falsehood.”

The Prime Minister’s office has maintained that Han Duck-soo never made cabinet control a condition for accepting his position. Government representatives have argued that allowing such claims to go unchallenged undermines public trust in democratic institutions.

South Korea’s political landscape has grown increasingly polarized in recent years, with sharp divisions between conservatives supporting President Yoon’s administration and progressives who backed former President Moon Jae-in. These divisions have intensified competition among media outlets aligned with different political factions.

The timing of the investigation has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who suggest it may be politically motivated. The Democratic Party released a statement questioning “selective enforcement” of misinformation laws against critics of the current administration.

If prosecutors decide to proceed with formal charges, Kim could face penalties under South Korea’s election laws and information and communications network laws, which prohibit spreading false information that may damage public interest.

The case also highlights broader regional concerns about misinformation in the digital age. Across Asia, governments have implemented various approaches to combat false information online, from Singapore’s Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act to Japan’s more hands-off approach emphasizing media literacy.

Kim has not yet issued a formal response to the investigation, though supporters have defended his right to political commentary and criticized what they characterize as government overreach.

As the investigation unfolds, it will likely fuel ongoing debates about the boundaries of political speech, the responsibilities of digital content creators, and the appropriate role of government in regulating online discourse in one of Asia’s most digitally connected democracies.
