Telangana’s former minister T Harish Rao has launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, accusing him of misrepresenting the Congress party’s performance in recent gram panchayat elections across the state.
Speaking to reporters on Friday after welcoming approximately 50 opposition party workers into the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) at Kodakandla in Gajwel mandal, Rao disputed the Chief Minister’s claims about Congress dominance in local elections. According to Rao, BRS secured 92 gram panchayats out of 179 in the politically significant Gajwel Constituency, while Congress managed to win only 68 panchayats.
“The Chief Minister is deliberately misleading the public by claiming Congress won a majority of panchayats in the constituency,” Rao stated. “The facts tell a different story. BRS has won over 40 percent of gram panchayats across Telangana, which clearly indicates the people’s rejection of Congress governance.”
The gram panchayat elections serve as a crucial barometer of political sentiment in rural Telangana, where local governance issues directly impact residents’ daily lives. These elections are particularly significant as they represent the first major electoral test for the Congress government since it came to power in the state.
Rao, who previously served as Finance Minister in the BRS government led by K Chandrashekar Rao, attributed his party’s electoral success to growing public disillusionment with Congress. He claimed that voters were responding to what he characterized as the Congress government’s failure to fulfill campaign promises made during the assembly elections.
“The people of Telangana have taught Congress a lesson for failing to keep its promises,” Rao asserted. “Revanth Reddy’s government has not implemented the promised loan waiver scheme or the rythu bharosa program to support farmers. They have even failed in the basic responsibility of ensuring adequate urea supply to farmers during the crucial planting season.”
The political temperature in Telangana has remained high since Congress defeated the incumbent BRS in the December 2023 assembly elections. The transition of power ended BRS’s decade-long rule in the state, which was formed in 2014 after separation from Andhra Pradesh.
During his address, Rao also criticized the handling of defections within the state legislature. He pointed out that several MLAs who had switched loyalties from BRS to Congress actively campaigned for Congress-backed sarpanch candidates. Rao noted that Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar had dismissed petitions related to these defections and criticized the Chief Minister for supporting this decision.
“The Speaker has dismissed our petitions regarding turncoat MLAs who switched to Congress from BRS, and the Chief Minister is backing this decision,” Rao said. “This shows their double standards on the issue of political defections.”
The conflict highlights the ongoing power struggle in Telangana politics, where BRS is attempting to recalibrate after its assembly election defeat while Congress works to solidify its governance credentials before the 2024 national elections.
Political analysts suggest that the gram panchayat election results may indicate rural voters’ early assessment of the Congress government’s performance on agricultural issues and rural development – critical factors in a state where agriculture remains a dominant economic activity.
The BRS continues to maintain a significant presence in many rural areas of Telangana, particularly in districts where irrigation projects were completed during its tenure. Meanwhile, Congress faces the challenge of delivering on its extensive campaign promises while managing the state’s finances.
As both parties prepare for upcoming electoral contests, including municipal elections and eventually the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the war of words between current and former government officials is likely to intensify, with each side claiming to represent the true interests of Telangana’s citizens.
