In the midst of ongoing joint U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran, a wave of misinformation has flooded social media platforms, complicating public understanding of the conflict that has claimed the life of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

As military strikes continued on Monday following the weekend’s major offensive, fact-checkers have identified numerous instances of manipulated media, AI-generated imagery, and repurposed old footage being presented as current documentation of the conflict.

Iranian state media confirmed early Sunday that Khamenei had been killed during Saturday’s joint military operation. In the information vacuum that followed, fabricated imagery purporting to show the Supreme Leader’s body trapped beneath rubble quickly circulated online. Analysis using Google’s Gemini app detected SynthID watermarks in the image, confirming it was entirely or partially generated using artificial intelligence tools.

The false image depicted a blurred body beneath debris while rescue workers in hard hats and safety vests cleared rubble as small fires burned in the background. No official photos of Khamenei’s body have been released to the public.

In another significant example of misinformation, claims that the USS Abraham Lincoln had been struck by Iranian ballistic missiles gained traction after Iranian leadership made the assertion. U.S. Central Command swiftly refuted these claims on social media, stating the aircraft carrier “was not hit” and that “the missiles didn’t even come close.” The military emphasized that the vessel continues to launch aircraft as part of ongoing operations.

Many purported images of the USS Abraham Lincoln sustaining damage have been identified as years-old photographs unrelated to current events. One widely shared image showing a sinking ship with a helicopter hovering above has been traced back to at least 2021, while another video of a vessel engulfed in flames originated from a Facebook post dated June 2025.

The fog of war has also facilitated the spread of video game footage misrepresented as combat documentation. A clip allegedly showing the downing of a U.S. fighter jet in Iran was identified as footage from a military simulation game posted to YouTube in November 2025. The original posting clearly labeled the content as in-game capture “for entertainment and learning purposes only.”

This misleading content circulated as the U.S. military confirmed three F-15E Strike Eagles were mistakenly downed in Kuwait by friendly Kuwaiti fire on Monday. Iranian state television attempted to claim credit for one of the incidents, adding another layer of confusion to the information landscape.

Perhaps most disturbing was the circulation of a video falsely purporting to show U.S. soldiers returning home in coffins from the current conflict. Fact-checkers determined the footage actually depicted a dignified transfer ceremony of U.S. Army service members who died in Iraq during Operation New Dawn. The transfer occurred at Dover Air Force Base on June 8, 2011, more than a decade before the current conflict.

The original video was posted to YouTube by a photographer and U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. Several visual elements in the footage, including a taxiing plane approximately one minute and 57 seconds into the recording and the consistent presence of a blue vehicle in the bottom right corner, confirm the match between the original video and the misleadingly captioned version currently circulating.

The proliferation of misinformation surrounding the Iran conflict highlights the challenges of maintaining an accurate information environment during fast-developing international crises. Social media users are encouraged to verify sources and exercise caution when encountering dramatic imagery or claims about military operations.

As the situation continues to evolve, official military and government statements, along with reporting from established news organizations with journalists in the region, remain the most reliable sources of information about the ongoing conflict.
