The Philippine defense department has issued a stark warning about AI-generated misinformation circulating on social media regarding the Middle East conflict, urging citizens to exercise caution when consuming news online.

In an official statement posted on Facebook, the Department of National Defense (DND) specifically disowned a fabricated video that has been making rounds on various platforms. The agency condemned the spread of such content, particularly during sensitive geopolitical situations.

“We urge vigilance against disinformation and condemn those who unnecessarily rouse panic during these circumstances,” the DND stated. “We enjoin the public to refrain from sharing unverified materials and obtain information only from reliable sources.”

The manipulated video in question featured an image of DND Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. accompanied by false claims suggesting he had expressed concerns about the Philippines being directly affected by the ongoing tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel. The department categorically rejected these claims.

The DND clarified the actual situation: “At the moment, the conflict is contained within the Middle East and there is no credible threat to our territory, as well as to Filipinos and foreign citizens in the Philippines.”

This incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following Iran’s missile attacks on Israel and growing concerns about potential regional escalation. The Philippines, home to approximately 2.2 million overseas workers in the Middle East, maintains close watch on developments that could affect its citizens abroad.

The spread of AI-generated misinformation represents a growing challenge for governments worldwide. Advanced artificial intelligence tools now make it increasingly difficult to distinguish between authentic and fabricated content, particularly videos and images of public officials supposedly making statements they never actually made.

Security experts have noted that such misinformation can be particularly dangerous during international conflicts, as it may trigger panic or misinformed decision-making among citizens. In the Philippines, where social media penetration is among the highest globally, false information can spread rapidly.

The DND emphasized that such fabrications cause unnecessary public confusion and anxiety. The department reassured Filipinos that appropriate contingency plans are in place should the situation change.

“Rest assured that the DND remains ready to respond to possible contingencies to safeguard the welfare of Filipinos should conditions warrant further action,” the agency stated.

This warning follows earlier assurances from both the DND and military officials that the Middle East tensions pose no immediate threat to Philippine security. These statements came amid renewed discussions about the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) between Manila and Washington, a military cooperation framework that has faced scrutiny amid changing regional security dynamics.

The Philippines maintains defense agreements with several countries, including the United States, as part of its security strategy in the Indo-Pacific region. However, the spread of misinformation regarding these agreements and international conflicts can complicate public understanding of the country’s defense posture.

Media literacy advocates have echoed the DND’s call, emphasizing the importance of verifying information through multiple credible sources before sharing content online, particularly during periods of international tension when misinformation tends to proliferate.
