Fox News issued an apology Sunday after broadcasting outdated footage of former President Donald Trump during its coverage of a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base, where the remains of six U.S. soldiers killed in the Middle East were returned.
The network acknowledged that archival footage from an earlier ceremony was mistakenly used in two Sunday morning broadcasts, calling it an “honest mistake.” A Fox News spokeswoman noted that the correct footage had been used in other segments, including coverage from Saturday.
“We regret the error and apologize for the incorrect footage,” Fox said in a statement. Anchor Griff Jenkins also delivered an on-air correction, expressing “respect and condolences” to the families of the fallen service members.
The controversy centered around footage showing Trump without his signature baseball cap. Critics suggested the network may have deliberately used older footage to present a more dignified image of the former president during the solemn ceremony, though these claims were made without evidence.
The incident occurred during a particularly sensitive event. Dignified transfer ceremonies, where fallen military personnel are returned to American soil, represent one of the most somber responsibilities of a commander in chief. The ceremony on Saturday honored six soldiers who lost their lives in combat operations.
In today’s polarized media landscape, the error quickly became fodder for criticism. Mehdi Hasan, founder of the online platform Zeteo, commented: “If any other network did this it would be a huge scandal, Fox would lead the chorus of criticisms and faux-outrage, and people would lose their jobs.”
The mistake drew criticism even from within Fox News itself. Johnny “Joey” Jones, a veteran and co-host of “The Big Weekend Show” on the network, expressed his dismay on social media.
“My belief was that this was an honest mistake, but that doesn’t make it an acceptable one,” Jones wrote. “Few things are more sacred than our heroes who give their lives in the line of duty.”
Jones defended his colleagues while acknowledging the severity of the error, asking critics to direct their complaints to him rather than taking “partisan jabs” at his “hard working colleagues.”
The incident highlights the challenges media organizations face when covering politically charged events in an environment where every editorial decision is scrutinized for potential bias. For news organizations like Fox News, which has maintained a close relationship with Trump throughout his political career, such errors can quickly become flashpoints for allegations of favorable treatment.
Dignified transfer ceremonies have historically been handled with extreme care by media outlets. Until 2009, media coverage of these ceremonies was prohibited entirely. When the Obama administration lifted this ban, it was with the understanding that such coverage would be conducted respectfully and only with family permission.
The error is particularly noteworthy as it comes during an election year when media coverage of candidates is under heightened scrutiny. As both major political parties prepare for their conventions and the general election campaign intensifies, incidents like this underscore the importance of accuracy and transparency in news reporting.
Fox News has not indicated whether any internal review or disciplinary measures would follow the incident, focusing instead on acknowledging the error and extending apologies to those affected.
