Police are searching for a suspect in the fatal shooting of Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a distinguished physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who was shot at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts. Loureiro, 47, a Portuguese national who was married, was shot Monday night and died Tuesday at a local hospital.
As of Wednesday morning, authorities had not identified any suspects or disclosed a possible motive for the killing, according to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office.
The shooting comes in the wake of another violent incident at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where two students were killed and nine others wounded in an attack days earlier. Federal investigators have stated there is no known connection between the two crimes, which have rocked the academic community in New England.
Loureiro had established himself as a leading figure in plasma physics since joining MIT in 2016. Last year, he was appointed to lead the university’s prestigious Plasma Science and Fusion Center, one of MIT’s largest research facilities. The center employs approximately 250 researchers across seven buildings and focuses on developing clean energy technology and other scientific advancements.
Born and raised in Viseu, central Portugal, Loureiro studied in Lisbon before earning his doctorate in London. Prior to his position at MIT, he worked at a nuclear fusion research institute in Lisbon, building his expertise in plasma science.
His research centered on plasma behavior and explaining the physics behind astronomical phenomena like solar flares. According to his obituary published on MIT’s news site, Loureiro’s work was instrumental in advancing the design of fusion devices capable of “harnessing the energy of fusing plasmas, bringing the dream of clean, near-limitless fusion power closer to reality.”
“It’s not hyperbole to say MIT is where you go to find solutions to humanity’s biggest problems,” Loureiro once told the school’s news outlet upon assuming leadership of the plasma lab. “Fusion energy will change the course of human history.”
The academic community has expressed profound grief over Loureiro’s death. Dennis Whyte, an engineering professor and former director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, remembered him as someone who “shone a bright light as a mentor, friend, teacher, colleague and leader, and was universally admired for his articulate, compassionate manner.”
Deepto Chakrabarty, the William A. M. Burden professor in astrophysics and head of the Department of Physics, described Loureiro as a “champion for plasma physics,” a valued colleague, and an inspiring mentor to graduate students.
MIT President Sally Kornbluth addressed the tragedy, noting that the “shocking loss for our community comes in a period of disturbing violence in many other places.” The Portuguese president’s office also released a statement of condolence, calling Loureiro’s death “an irreparable loss for science and for all those with whom he worked and lived.”
Meanwhile, as investigators pursue leads in Loureiro’s case, authorities in Providence continue their search for the suspect in the Brown University shooting. That investigation entered its fifth day on Wednesday, with police urging the public to review security or cellphone footage from the week before the attack. Investigators believe the gunman may have surveilled the area prior to carrying out the shooting.
The two unrelated incidents have heightened concerns about violence targeting academic institutions, particularly in the Northeast. Campus security measures are being reevaluated at universities across the region as these investigations continue.
The loss of Loureiro represents a significant blow to the scientific community, particularly in the field of plasma physics and fusion energy research, where his contributions were advancing solutions to global energy challenges. Colleagues describe his work as potentially transformative for clean energy technology, making his untimely death all the more devastating for both the academic world and the broader scientific community.
